Fulham vs Chelsea press conference: Potter confirms forward's return and updates on Pulisic and Sterling injuries
11 JAN 2023
Graham Potter has confirmed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back in contention to play for Chelsea when we face Fulham in the Premier League on Thursday evening and provided further updates on the recoveries of Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Reece James and Ben Chilwell.
The Blues head coach has been dealing with a lengthy list of absentees recently due to a number of injuries and provided an extensive update on how various players recoveries are going, including mixed news on the trio who went off in our last Premier League fixture against Manchester City - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling.
Aubameyang missed Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie at Man City due to a back issue, as did Sterling and Pulisic after picking up problems in the league game against the same opponents four days earlier, but only one of them is able to return in time to play against Fulham.
'Pierre’s fine so he’ll be in the squad for the game tomorrow,' confirmed Graham Potter. 'Christian’s going to be out for a couple of months we think. Hopefully it will be less, but that’s the timeframe there.
'We think Raheem will be out for less time than Christian. We’re still evaluating the actual extent of it, but hopefully it will be less than that.'
Potter also gave an overview of the progress made by some of the other names on our extensive injury list - Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ben Chilwell, Reece James and N'Golo Kante - revealing some promising developments, even if it is still too soon for them to be considered for selection.
'We’re making progress,' he explained. 'Ruben is getting closer, Ben is getting closer.
'Reece was out on the grass today, not training with the team but training on his own. N’Golo’s had his first couple of days out training on his own as well, although he has still got a long, long way to go before he is back fully.
'So it felt a bit more positive, obviously, to see those guys out there training and it gives people a bit of a lift.'

Wesley Fofana and Armando Broja are among Chelsea's long-term absentees, while Edouard Mendy is unavailable after undergoing surgery on a fractured finger last week.
Neeskens Kebano is out long-term for Fulham with a ruptured Achilles, but they hope Shane Duffy will be back in contention for this game following illness.
== Fulham vs Chelsea suspension ==
There are no players suspended for Chelsea, but Fulham will be without their top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic.
In the Premier League, five yellow cards received before 19 league fixtures (Crystal Palace at home on 15 January) have been played will result in a one-match suspension in the competition.

Potter reacts to the signing of Joao Felix
11 JAN 2023
Chelsea have signed Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid and head coach Graham Potter has since revealed his excitement at working with the Portuguese forward.
The 23-year-old featured heavily for the Spanish side prior to joining up with the Blues, missing just two of 16 league matches this season, scoring four goals.
Joao Felix has been at Cobham meeting his new team-mates and getting to know his new surroundings this morning, ahead of Chelsea’s match with Fulham on Thursday evening.
At his pre-match press conference, Potter reacted to the January signing, outlining the qualities he will add to his side.
‘He is a quality player, and he will make a difference in the final third of the pitch. He is young, but has really good experience. The signing gives everybody a lift,’ Potter said.
‘He is a good age and he can play as a second striker between the lines and making a difference in the final third. We are looking forward to working with him.'
Injuries in wide areas to Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling last week have caused debate as to whether our new recruit was signed off the back of those injuries, though our head coach said that is not exactly the case.
‘We have been aware of it for a while, these things do not happen quickly. Maybe the injuries have sharpened the focus a little bit. It is nice to get him here, get him training today and it is positive for us.’
Potter added that the club are awaiting the green light as to whether the attacker was signed in time to feature in west London on Thursday.
‘We will see for the game. We are waiting for the confirmation on that, if he can play.
‘He has been training regularly and has had game time, so from a physical perspective he can go straight in,' Potter added.
‘There is always an unknown going from country to country, and there's always an adaptation period but in terms of how long that takes can go from player to player.
'I see a confident person and player that can can impose himself on the game. His personality traits are that he can take the ball in tight spaces and make passes. He compliments what we have, he is a nice addition as clearly he is a talented player who can help the team.'

Every word Graham Potter said on Chelsea form, Joao Felix signing, Pulisic, Sterling, Aubameyang
By Adam Newson, Chelsea correspondent - UPDATED 14:49, 11 JAN 2023
Why hasn’t it worked out for him at Atletico?
“I’ve no idea and it’s not for me to speculate. Sometimes these things happen in football but for us, he’s a good age, the quality is there, he’s a fantastic player. He has qualities as player as a second striker between the lines and making something happen in the final third. We’re looking forward to working with him.”
Is there more to come in the January window?
“There is time, whether we’ll find the right players or not is another thing. As I’ve said before, you have to look in this window to make the right decisions but it isn’t straightforward. It’s complicated. We’re happy with what we’ve done so far but we’ll keep going to try to help the team.”
Where do you see Joao Felix fitting into the starting XI, can he fix the goalscoring problem?
“My thoughts are that you have to fix the team. It’s not just one person to solve the problems. You have to fix the team, attack better, create chances, and then whoever is playing then can score and the team can win. That is the focus. Clearly, though, Joao is a top player, a talented player, and he can help the team.”
