Brilliant Beach grabs first senior win
23 JAN 2023
Eddie Beach produced a fantastic series of saves to inspire Chelmsford City to an unlikely victory over Weymouth, his first in senior football, and claim Loan Performance of the Week.
The young goalkeeper joined National League South side Chelmsford on his maiden loan just over a week ago and, after a penalty shootout exit from the FA Trophy and defeat on his league debut, Beach picked up his first win as they made the long trip down to Dorset on Saturday.
It was a win which owed much to the on loan keeper, too, as in truth Weymouth were the better side throughout and peppered Beach’s goal with shots, only to be kept out by a string of excellent saves from the 19-year-old.
He was at it right from the start when, with the game goalless, Weymouth squared across goal to find their striker Ahkeem Rose free 10 yards out, but Beach showed brilliant reactions to stick out a strong arm and deny the home side what seemed a certain goal.
Beach produced even better to frustrate Rose again, after Chelmsford had taken the lead against the run of play. In a similar situation, the Weymouth man this time went low and placed a shot in the bottom corner, but Beach somehow got down and across to divert it around the post with his fingertips, much to the Weymouth fans’ disbelief.
Those were just two of several impressive saves from Beach to secure the win, with the majority of the game played in Chelmsford’s half, especially after Weymouth had equalised with a looping header which dropped just beyond Beach’s reach.
However, the keeper refused to be beaten again and repeatedly frustrated the home team until Chelmsford capitalised on a defensive slip and suspect goalkeeping at the other end to snatch a 2-1 victory in the 89th minute.
Weymouth manager Bobby Wilkinson summed up the feeling of the home side that without Beach they could have won the game: ‘We could’ve been three or four up, I think their keeper’s the man of the match. I’ve not seen my boys hurt that bad, they knew this was three points, definitely a point, wasted.’
In other loan news, Harvey Vale has returned to Chelsea from his loan spell with Hull City, having made two Championship appearances there as injury saw him sidelined for much of his time with the Tigers.
He went straight into our development squad’s line-up at the weekend, providing an assist in our 4-2 win away at Fulham in the Premier League 2.
