Graham Potter acknowledged the significance of Chelsea’s victory over Crystal Palace after a run without a win, and the head coach felt it was a deserved outcome after a determined and resilient performance from his players.

‘It was a wonderful and fitting tribute for an amazing man,’ said Potter. ‘We’ve been very saddened of course but then you start to think about his life and what a special person he was to us all, we’re just full of love for him.’

‘It was Benoit’s first Premier League game, he did really well. Koulibaly has had a lot of football recently, and the turnaround from Thursday night to today was short. He passed the ball well, when he needed to head it out he did, he’s obviously adapting to the Premier League. He’s going to get better and better, but the first game was very positive.

．Do you feel relieved more than anything tonight?
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved because it’s nice to get a win. I thought we played better than getting no points against Fulham. And when you get a red card for Joao Felix, who is the last person you think you’d get a red card, you think, ‘What have we done here?’ in terms of getting luck. But you can’t rely on that.
"You have to keep going and you have to deal with the bad times, deal with the tough situations accept the criticism that comes your way, and take responsibility. That’s what we’ve tried to do. The players have suffered, of course. It’s not nice. That is why it’s important they enjoy the win today, the three points, and it gives us a shot in the arm for the weekend.”
．Where do you stand on the length of contract – eight-and-a-half years – that has been given to Mudryk?
“I’m the head coach and, as you know, I’ve had enough to worry about before thinking about contract lengths. I’ll leave that to the club and what’s right for the club. I’ll try to support as best I can. I'm looking forward to working with him. If I'm here for the remainder of his contract, then we'll all be happy.”
．He’s the fifth signing you’ve made in this window, how difficult is it to get stability when there are new players coming in all the time?
“That’s part of what I’ve been talking about for a long time. Obviously, when we’re analysing football, it’s just the results and that affects everything. There’s a period of transition and you have to stabilise things and work to support as best you can. If you’re in a position where in a small period too many people are making recruitment decisions, it’s not a recipe for short- or long-term success.
"So we have to stabilise things, make good decisions, and align our resources. Resources are one thing but they have to be aligned and used in the right way.”
．The signing of Mudryk means there’s another forward in your squad, is the challenge now for you to keep everyone happy going forward?
“That’s the challenge for us. We want to do better, want to play better, want to play better and get more points and wins. You need a squad that is balanced, that has the right amount of competition, and I think that he [Mudryk] brings that. Then it’s my job to make the selections.”
．Are you still looking to add some players in other areas to the squad this month?
“We’ve got to be, not necessarily careful, but you’ve got to understand we’ve got ten or eleven players unavailable and you can’t just sign players to replace those because then you’d have a squad of 30 and that is a problem.
"So you have to do the right thing and look at what the right solutions are. Sometimes they are not aligned completely as you’d like them because the January window is complicated. But always my job is to try to support the club, make the right decisions, and help the team improve.”
．The impression is Graham that you were hired because of your coaching history but the schedule hasn’t allowed you a great deal of time to do that. Do you think you will have time going forward now you’re out of the domestic cup competitions?
“All the periods have been critical because even though we walked into the washing machine in terms of games, Champions League, a condensed schedule before a World Cup, it was a unique situation. And as we went along key players kept dropping away and we were struggling for stability and any real confidence that stability brings.
"You learn a lot from that even though it is not nice as I’ve said. We’ve had to deal with what we’ve had to deal with, it’s pretty unprecedented I must say. The next period of games, I think we have some time and time is always valuable for us.
"We’ll use it as best we can. I understand timescales people work to are short these days and people have short memories, but we keep having to work and trying to improve. That’s what we’ll do.”
