Kovacic pleased with Lampard return
08 APR 2023
Mateo Kovacic is one of our players who knows Frank Lampard from his first spell in charge of Chelsea, so he is well placed to discuss the caretaker manager’s return to the Bridge.
The Croatian played 70 times under Lampard between August 2019 and January 2021, a period in which the midfielder scored his first Chelsea goals and played an important role as we finished in fourth place in the Premier League table and reached the FA Cup final.
Kovacic acknowledged the collective failings so far this season that mean we start today’s fixture against Wolves in the bottom half of the table, but he is determined to end well under Lampard and make our mark in Europe.
‘He was our coach so it's good news that he's back and trying to change our season because it's not been good, we have to be honest,’ admitted Kovacic.
‘In the end, it's easier to sack a coach than 30 players, but it is on us as well, we need to do better, and we have to say thank you to Potter who did a good job, but it is not easy with so many changes so it was a tough situation for him.
‘We now have the opportunity to climb up the table as much as we can and we have two beautiful games against Real Madrid, so there is a possibility, and if there is a possibility to finish the season good, we should take it.’
Lampard has only had a couple of days to work with the players, many of whom have arrived since he departed two years ago, but Kovacic says it is already obvious what he wants to see from the Blues in the coming weeks.
‘We had a short meeting and he explained to us what he wants, what his desire is for the rest of the season.
‘He came very calm with a clear idea of what he expects from us, but it's still early days and we'll see what he asks of us on the pitch. But he is back and we want to do our best for the club.’
