Chelsea vs Brentford press conference: Lampard reveals James and Mount out for the season

Frank Lampard has confirmed three members of his squad will miss our next match against Brentford, including two who could have played their last game this season due to injury.

Speaking to the media ahead of Chelsea hosting Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, Frank Lampard provided an update on the injury situation among his squad, revealing three new additions to his list of absentees in Kai Havertz, Reece James and Mason Mount.

There was mixed news on two of those players, with Havertz a short-term absence while James' 2022/23 campaign appears to be over.

'Reece James is unavailable for this game and probably for the rest of the season as well,' said our caretaker manager. 'Reece had a hamstring injury that he picked up in the Madrid game, got through the game, but we scanned it in the following days and he'll be out.

There was further bad news on Mount, who's playing time has been severely restricted recently as he attempted to manage an issue. However, that attempt appears to have been unsuccessful, meaning more time on the sidelines.

'Mason is the same as Reece unfortunately, although he possibly might be back in time for our last game of the season, but that’s not certain,' added Lampard. 'Mason has been carrying this pelvic injury for a quite a while, it definitely predates myself by a while.

'If they deserve it, for sure. There’s the individual work of showing that you deserve it and I’m fully for that.

Lampard on ‘special talent’ Enzo and why there’s still plenty to play for

Frank Lampard has labelled Enzo Fernandez as a ‘fantastic talent’ and believes he is the ‘future’ of Chelsea.
The World Cup-winning midfielder has impressed since joining the Blues form Benfica in January and our caretaker manager has been delighted with the impact – both on and off the pitch – that the Argentinian has displayed so soon into his Chelsea career.
With a London derby against Brentford next up for Chelsea, Lampard took time at his pre-match press conference to single Enzo out for praise.
‘He's a fantastic talent,’ Lampard said of the midfielder. ‘For such a young player to achieve what he's achieved in this footballing year, it really is amazing. To win the World Cup and earn a great move to a club like Chelsea, it’s really impressive.
‘It’s been a difficult moment to come to the club, but it's a challenge that will make him better. He’s a really bright talent for his age but, of course, he needs help and support to fulfil his potential and will need time to do that. I’ve been really pleased with Enzo. I think he's the future of Chelsea but we must also give him time to settle.’
Meanwhile Lampard rejected the notion from journalists at his pre-match news briefing that Chelsea have nothing to play for in these final games, with our caretaker manager pointing to the fact that playing for this club demands a certain level no matter what the stakes.
‘I don't have a mentality that there's nothing to play for,’ added Lampard. ‘You won't compete absolutely every season, it comes down to personal pride and responsibility.
‘The schedule was always going to be a challenge but we knew that coming in, with games coming thick and fast. That period's gone, so it gives us time to work in between. There's always a lot of challenges. Football is about challenges and you have to tackle them head on. The run-in is really tough, so my interest is to see how the players react to that.’

I'm not going to get involved in any future manager talk because it's all speculation as you say. Simple as that.
．Expect to be in charge for the final seven games after losing first four?
I wouldn't expect anything in football. I think it's very clear we came into this club when it was in big difficulties. One day to prepare for Wolves, two games against Real Madrid - the second performance was much better, a proper team performance like I want to see. The game in between that with Brighton we had to change a lot of the squad. There were a lot of factors, as to the four games we've had since we've been working here. The team and the club have been struggling for a while. We come in with a view to help and we'll keep working to help in the short time. The world won't change in a short time but we'll keep doing our maximum to do that.

It feels like it with the tone of your question if I'm honest. If you want to think that, yeah but for me it doesn't. I'm the manager of Chelsea, I have a big link to this club and pride and so should the players. If you want to take it down your route, it's over, my route, it's absolutely not over.
．What have you been impressed most with about Brentford?
I've been impressed with everything. Stability, a really good coach, and consistency to stay with the coach through difficult moments you have in seasons which for a team like Brentford establishing themselves in the Premier League will mean moments maybe of difficult, they've come those always. A real clear idea of how they want to play, a real clear idea of link to the recruitment of how they want to play. I think it's a huge credit to everbody involved.
