Kepa: We have a lot to improve on for Real return

13 APR 2023

Kepa Arrizabalaga acknowledged that Chelsea were second best to Real Madrid at the Benabeu last night but refused to accept that our Champions League quarter-final clash is already out of reach.

Frank Lampard’s Blues were defeated 2-0 in the Spanish capital after goals in each half from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio put us to the sword, with the challenge becoming even harder following a straight red card for defender Ben Chilwell.

Our Spanish goalkeeper conceded that the hosts were the better side and insists the Blues must improve ahead of the second leg, where he retains hope of an epic comeback after pointing out how chances were created during an expansive opening to last night’s tie.

‘Of course we leave with the feeling that they have been superior [in the first leg] and it has cost us a lot to play in the opposite half and to create chances but not take them,’ said Kepa.

‘Obviously it could even have been worse after the expulsion [Ben Chilwell’s red card], because playing for 30 minutes with one less [player] at the Bernabeu in the Champions League is a lot.

‘They have had more chances and we have a lot to improve on for the second leg. The feeling is that we were not at our level and for now we must look at ourselves. The players are the first to be responsible and we must improve.’

Fofana: A difficult night but positives to take

13 APR 2023

Defender Wesley Fofana says our Champions League tie against Real Madrid is still all to play for when we return to Stamford Bridge for the second leg next week.

The Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat in the Spanish capital due to goals from Fofana’s compatriot Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

After the match, the Frenchman reflected on playing with 10 men for half an hour, and the two-goal deficit we must overcome in west London next Tuesday.

‘It is difficult to take because we lost a player, conceded one goal in each half. Of course, it is always disappointing to concede two goals.

‘The current situation is difficult for everybody, but next week we’re playing the second leg at home which is good. We’re at Stamford Bridge which is our home and an amazing stadium. It is only 2-0, and it is all to play for.’

Fofana was also asked to reveal Frank Lampard’s message prior to the knockout tie.

‘He said play for the club, the badge and for Chelsea. We will prepare for the next game. We lost tonight but when you see the game it is ok, as 2-0 isn't the worst. There are positives to take. It is hard for everybody as one coach comes in, he leaves and then another coach arrives.

‘Every player is focused on winning games. we are Chelsea, a big club,’ he added. ‘It is important to try our best for everyone to win more games. it is complicated, of course, the Champions League is the biggest competition and we will still try to win it.’
