Business as usual at Chelsea this morning after the 2-0 loss to Villa. Graham Potter will be in charge for Liverpool. Focus remains on that game. No change planned before it despite pressure building. pic.twitter.com/MJDajtEYHa

🚨 Graham Potter has been sacked by Chelsea. Very unexpected and fast-moving development based on this morning. All happened very quickly. It was anticipated he'd manage against Liverpool, but things moved quickly and Potter is now gone. pic.twitter.com/YzE029CnI7

This aged well... but again, this morning that was absolutely the club's plan. Things change very fast. Potter expected to have the Liverpool game, and club even sent out his pre-match presser invite. But by early afternoon #CFC board moved fast. https://t.co/nbYKxhs4QY

🚨 Potter will receive regular severance unrelated to remaining duration of 5yr contract signed on joining Chelsea from Brighton in Sept 2022. Most of his staff to remain at #CFC until exhaustive process to recruit new head coach is complete @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/NyBlcABLPF

Just 21 goals in 22 league games. Chelsea didn't score in 9 of those games. Chelsea are on course for their lowest finish since 1996. https://t.co/wB843RuFnf #CFC https://t.co/nt2iyIKBws

I'm sad. I'm sad because I wanted Chelsea to be successful under a decent, principled and thoughtful manager who didn't turn into a dickhead when things got tough and who understands the value of empathy.

I'm sad because it was pretty unanimous among Chelsea fans that he was a good hire at a time when Tuchel's departure caused plenty of concern, and there was genuine excitement at what a future under him could look like.

None of this is to say it's the wrong decision or that Potter was the right manager for Chelsea anywhere along the way, but it's still possible to recognise the merits of tonight's decision while being disappointed at the journey and the outcome.

There are a great many managers who will be linked with the job I have no interest in coming within 50 miles of Cobham. There are maybe a couple who are interesting and one or two who would be potentially good fits but extremely unlikely. The speculation will be insufferable.
