Loftus-Cheek: We want to get back to being ruthless
22 MAY 2023
Ruben Loftus-Cheek says there are plenty of positives to take from our slender defeat to Manchester City yesterday, and that the Blues can learn from the ruthlessness of City’s attacking display going forward.
The Cobham graduate started in a midfield duo with Enzo Fernandez and played well at the Etihad Stadium. Barring an early strike from Julian Alvarez, the Citizens barely threatened Kepa Arrizabalaga’s net and that is something Loftus-Cheek himself noted, when he spoke post-match.
‘You know what can happen here if they’re on their game and on fire. They can really dismantle teams. City were fantastic this season, even when it doesn’t look like they will win the league they always find a way. That is the kind of ruthlessness we want to get back to because Chelsea have had that,’ Ruben said after the 1-0 loss.
‘City weren’t at their brilliant best but they still posed a threat and we made it difficult for them. A mistake for the goal can happen but other than that I think we had most the chances and for the most part, challenged them. It was a decent performance. We didn’t have that finishing touch at the end but we played some good football at times and defended well. It’s one of those and it is why they are champions.’
Going forward, Frank Lampard’s side have another trip to Manchester, this time to Old Trafford to the red side, before welcoming Newcastle United on the final day.
Ruben has challenged himself and his team-mates to represent the London club as best as they can in those two games, before switching our attentions to pre-season and next season where he hopes to see us improve mentally.
‘It is now all about our pride and sticking together. We want to finish to season strong because you don’t want to lose games no matter if it doesn’t mean anything. It is about us playing well for ourselves, the club and the fans because we owe that to the club. It was good to come here and have a test, and that should give us confidence going into the final two games.
‘I don’t want to give all the excuses under the sun why we are where we are, but its been very difficult. It was up to us players to step up and ignore the noise. A lot changed, things we haven’t felt before,’ the midfielder added.
‘Now, we have to look towards next season and getting that mentality ready and get us out of this whole. We don’t want this season leaking into the next. We have to get in the right frame of mind to get us ready to start next season firing.’
