Chalobah on finishing strong for the fans and reflections on the season

25 MAY 2023

Trevoh Chalobah believes a strong finish to the current campaign could be the ‘perfect lift’ for the Blues heading into next season.

By his own admission, the Chelsea defender states that this season has not been good enough on the pitch and feels the players owe it to the fans to give them something to smile about in the final two games of the season, starting with tonight’s trip to Manchester United.

While expecting a tough game at Old Trafford, the Cobham graduate wants to see a much-improved performance from the Blues that he hopes will generate a positive result – and a reward for the excellent support shown to the side all season from the stands.

‘We need to put in a performance, first and foremost,’ said Chalobah when asked about the plan heading into tonight’s game in Manchester.

‘We know that the results haven’t been there for us and as a team, we take responsibility. It’s important we put in a strong showing at Old Trafford, focus on getting the basics right and then hopefully the result will follow.

‘I think we need to get that performance right, to help us have that feeling of being confident in our play. We know that Manchester United are a good team but we need to go there, stamp our authority and not hide from anything.

‘We want to do it for the fans, they’ve supported us all season and they deserve more from us. If we can perform well in these final two games, I think it can give us all a lift heading into the summer and give us something to build from for next season.’

Chalobah is honest enough to accept that this campaign has not been good enough or acceptable at Chelsea’s level, and the defender feels the summer is the time for reflection and improvement before reporting back for pre-season.

‘It’s been a tough season,’ he said. ‘Obviously things have not gone the way we wanted it to go but I see it as a learning curve and a stepping stone to get to where we want to be as a club.

‘We all know the goal of where we want to get to, we also know it’s not going to happen overnight because we’ve had a lot of changes at the club over the past year or so. We’ve had a lot of players come in and these things take time to work.

I think we have to look at this year as a season of reflection and ensuring we return to pre-season with a bang, with everyone ready to hit the ground running.

‘We want to improve next season and I think this is a squad with a lot of talent, so we know we need to do a lot better.’
