Bournemouth vs Chelsea press conference: Lampard on injury latest and Badiashile’s chances
05 MAY 2023
Speaking before Chelsea’s trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League, Frank Lampard reported no fresh injury concerns, and our caretaker manager also discussed the chances of Benoit Badiashile featuring at the Vitality Stadium.
Lampard answered the media’s questions at Cobham before he and the squad travel south to Bournemouth ahead of our South Coast meeting tomorrow.
He had nothing to add on the injury front, so Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly remain out, along with longer-term absentees Mason Mount and Reece James.
One player who has been fit recently but hasn’t featured much is Benoit Badiashile. He has only played once since the draw with Everton in March, and Lampard was asked if he could return to the starting XI at the Vitality.
‘He’s very close,’ said Lampard. ‘He couldn’t play in the Champions League for me. He played against Brighton which was a difficult match for everybody. He’s in competition with Thiago, with Wesley, Trevoh. He’s very close, he’s training well.
‘There are a lot of young players who have come from a different league. It’s understandable to have moments of game time and moments when you’re not. You’re finding your feet in this league.
‘In a normal case, these players come in at a club like Chelsea at a moment of big stability. At this moment, it’s not the case. Credit to those players, it’s not easy to take that responsibility on their shoulders. They’re all trying to work and keep going and we’re here as staff to support that.’
Lampard reiterated words he had said in the wake of the Arsenal defeat that the players care but many are struggling for confidence or form for a variety of reasons, and his and his staff’s job was to try and help recover it in the coming weeks.
He was also asked by one journalist if he had a message to the Chelsea fans ahead of our final five fixtures of 2022/23, with the Blues in the extremely rare situation of not challenging for anything substantial.
‘The fans will stick with the team,’ stressed Lampard. ‘I don’t have to tell them much more than that. You could see that with the Chelsea fans at the end of the Arsenal game. From when I first joined, the club has gone from a really big football club to a monster of a football club worldwide, so the fanbase goes much wider than that.
‘Everyone on the outside wants to say there’s not much on it, but myself and the players have to show an immense amount of pride in what we do in these games. It’s the first step into the future.
‘Will we need a reboot of some sense in the summer? Sure, that’s clear, but at the moment we have to do what is in front of us, and the fans can be sure from my point of view I am pushing for that, and I hope they can see the rewards of that wherever they are.’
== Bournemouth vs Chelsea injury list ==
Reece James has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring issue, while Mason Mount is still missing after undergoing surgery on a pelvic injury. Armando Broja remains unavailable as he continues his rehabilitation from cruciate ligament damage.
Bournemouth are expected to be without Ryan Fredericks, Junior Stanislas and Marcus Tavernier. Kieffer Moore went off with concussion during the Cherries' win over Leeds last weekend, a game Chris Mepham missed because of a thigh injury. Hamed Traore is a doubt.
== Bournemouth vs Chelsea suspension ==
There are no suspensions for either side in this match.
As Chelsea have now surpassed 32 games in the Premier League this season, it is no longer possible for players to be suspended due to the number of accumulated yellow cards in 2022/23. However, bans will still be issued for players who are sent off in the competition.

Lampard’s praise for O’Neil and Solanke
05 MAY 2023
Frank Lampard has praised the work of Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil while also labelling Cherries striker Dominic Solanke as a ‘threat’ ahead of our weekend meeting.
The Blues head to the south coast searching for a first win under Lampard, with our caretaker manager leading his side out at the Vitality Stadium at 3pm on Saturday.
In the opposing dugout will be Gary O’Neil, who moved from interim to permanent manager midway through the season, with the Cherries head coach receiving plenty of praise from Frank for guiding Bournemouth away from the relegation zone and securing their place in the top flight for next season.
‘Gary's done a great job, so full credit to him,’ said Frank. ‘I don't any of know the details behind it in terms of the ins and outs but he’s clearly done a very good job there.
‘What he's created is a team with high energy, high quality, high intensity and a team that’s full of togetherness, it seems from the outside. From where he came in, I think he’s done a really good job and he's getting the credit he rightfully deserves.’
Spearheading the attack for Bournemouth has been their talisman Solanke, who progressed through the Academy ranks with Chelsea before eventually departing for Liverpool, before making his mark at Bournemouth.
He scored the goals to take the Cherries up from the Championship last season and remains their dangerman, with Lampard pleased to see his one-time Chelsea team-mate making his mark having taken a different route to the Premier League.
‘I remember training with Dom,’ recalled Lampard. ‘He was a young man coming in to train with the first team so he was a bit in and out but clearly he’s a high talent.
‘From my links with the Academy and from speaking with the coaches, I know they have a high regard for him and sometimes different players take different routes.
‘It’s good to see him performing, he’s still young and it’s clear he’s a big player for them. He’s certainly a threat. I'm pleased for Dominic on an individual note because he has his origins here at the club.’

Lampard: Players should show respect for fans
06 MAY 2023
Frank talks about applause, players being human, and adversity building strength...
In his 13 years as a Chelsea player, Frank Lampard built up a tremendous rapport with Blues supporters.
Showing appreciation for the backing received is part of that, as is on-pitch achievement, and even though games have been ending without wins this season, the clapping of the fans after the final whistle should remain in place our caretaker manager makes clear, and indeed players have been thanking the fans after recent matches.
‘I haven’t asked them for that but I expect it from them,’ Lampard says. ‘At Arsenal I went and did the same myself. I think there is and there should be a big respect from players to the fans who pay their money and support the club.
‘If there are moments when that doesn’t quite happen, one thing I say is the players are humans who sometimes have big disappointments themselves, and I don’t think that should be completely read into, but generally it should be that the players go and appreciate the fans.’
The Blues are at Bournemouth today aiming to be able to celebrate with our supporters for the first time since Lampard returned to the club. While large parts of this season have been painful for the players, he believes they can turn the experiences into a positive for the future.
‘Any top sports team or top sportsperson has numerous amounts of adversity in their career, and those adverse moments are what make you come back stronger and what makes success more pleasurable.’

Lampard: Sterling has credit in the bank
06 MAY 2023
Raheem Sterling has the absolute backing of Frank Lampard to rediscover his very best form at Chelsea Football Club.
The two have worked together closely for a month now but of course our caretaker manager has been well aware of the summer signing’s career before then. He has selected him in all but one of the six starting 11s he has so far named.
‘Raheem has had an incredible career,’ Lampard declares. ‘I’ve spent the last three years speaking to all the younger wingers that I have worked with and shown them Raheem Sterling arriving at the back post, or defensively the work he does. You cannot take away from him any of what he has done for Manchester City and for England.
‘When you move club, and even when everyone outside says that moving from Man City to Chelsea cannot be hard work or a terrible situation, it does bring about changes in your life,’ he adds.
‘The performance of the team this season has not been great, so there can always be a lot of contributing factors to individual form. One thing I feel about Raheem when speaking to him is he is very honest in terms of himself.
‘He has got credit in the bank so he only needs to keep working and things around will maybe fall more into place. With Raheem he will show what he has shown in his career.’
Speaking more widely, Lampard believes there are understandable reasons for a lot of players’ form this season.
‘There’s the new younger players and players who maybe will be moving on,’ he lists. ‘There are a lot of those reasons and some of them I try to knock on the head because they can interfere, but other ones are actually quite real.
‘These players do care, they do want to be motivated and they do want to find a direction and be a success at Chelsea Football Club, but the process to get there is the one that is now in front of us.’

Every word Frank Lampard said on Chelsea job, Todd Boehly, Benoit Badiashile and Bournemouth
By Bobby Vincent, Chelsea Writer - UPDATED 14:48, 5 MAY 2023
.You said the players do care but they are too nice to play against. Have you addressed that on the training pitch?
"We addressed it on the training pitch. Firstly, to be clear, when I said the players care – I know they do because I've been a player and a coach now for a long time. The players do care. They've all got their reasons to care. The reality is the action that comes from that and sometimes there can be many reasons why there's an underperformance or some not so great results. I don't see that as something that's a training pitch issue as such.
"We're working with the players as a group or individually to try and make sure that everyone is on point. Since Arsenal, it's been pretty much all recovery and some small prep this morning to play. So there isn't the turnaround and chance to deal with some of these issues that are more of the fundamental issues I guess."
.Todd Boehly said this week that he's determined to make things right. What did you make of the comments? Do you have the input?
"I think it's a good thing. He speaks so positively, that's what I've found since I've been here. [He has] good intentions where the club is going to be taken, so that's good. From my point of view, I don't know. I'm here working with the squad. I'm here for this period at the minute to try and get some form of turnaround in terms of feeling, performance and results. Other than that, it's the owners of the club that make the big decisions."
.What have you been told about the managerial situation? Any update?
"No, nothing."
.If you could sum up what needs to improve exactly [for the new manager] to get the club where they want to be...
"That's not for me to talk about now. I'm here until the end of the season. It's not for me to answer at this point."
.You've had this remarkable career, where do you still get the hunger from to manage? It doesn't look much fun on the outside...
"You probably have to go and ask every Premier League manager that same question. It's what we do. I'm fortunate enough to have a family and the career behind me. I'm 44 years of age. I'm just working how you're working. Is your job a delight every day, or?"
.I get home earlier...
"You might not. You might get home later and not from work..."
.As a club legend, how much are you hurting right now?
"I'm not hurting because it might be me but I've been part of this club through its big success. It's the same in sport, any sport, it can give you moments of adversity. We at Chelsea have been pretty fortunate for 20 years but when the spotlight is on you, it's on you and as a professional player or coach, you have to understand and handle that because every team will have these periods. Even as a fan base, you can be frustrated, want more, whatever, but I also think you have to have an understanding of what's happened in the last 20 years at Chelsea Football Club.
"It's not one for me, personally, to sit on and hurt us – it's more of finding the action of what's going to get us out of this. The action this season is not going to get us in the Champions League, the top eight or whatever. Who knows where it will get us? But it will be like the first small step and that's what we have to consider. Not all fans want to hear that but it's a reality."
.Do you feel like interim managers can have the same impact at a club like Chelsea or do you feel like the players need more stability?
"Every situation is different. I'm the fourth manager, Bruno did one game, so from that you can see it's been a tough season all round. It's a new situation for me because all of my jobs have been permanent before.
"The last time I came to Chelsea, there was a lot of upheaval. We had to put the squad together and you could see the benefits from that as the season went on. This job is just different. It might be more common in the modern day because of the pressure of the big business of modern football in the Premier League and that's it."
.Are you feeding back to those higher up in the club about the things you see with players on a day-to-day basis?
"Yeah, I've got communication with everything that is going on because that's part of my role. As much as we're in a results business, this cannot be the same next season. So my views, having worked here before, with a lot of the squad, I think my opinion can be valid and I think I can express that as I go."
.Is it frustrating that maybe the performances and results are having an affect on you as a manager?
"It comes with the territory. I've had three permanent jobs and this is my fourth. I think everyone understands the difficulty of the situation I've come into, I certainly did when I came in. Especially in those first two weeks where we played five times, two against Real Madrid and these things without much time to lay things down. You have to accept that as a consequence of the job. As much as you have your great moments, there will be some moments where they're not."
.Is it a case where the stats tell the full picture?
"Well, if you want to list our last four Premier League games, then no. They're not good. That is the full picture. This season is a reality, our league position is a reality, our points is a reality, our goals scored is a reality of the season. We've had four managers through the season, so that's a reality of where the club is at. But that's not my job to focus too much on that or to think about what stats will be produced from the outside because that's a common thing in modern day football. You can make any stat in the moment."
