Arsenal vs Chelsea press conference: Havertz return boosts striker options but Koulibaly and Cucurella still out

01 MAY 2023

Frank Lampard delivered the welcome news that Kai Havertz will be available for selection against Arsenal, although the outlook wasn't so good on our injured defenders, and he also discussed facing former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

Chelsea travel across London to take on title hopefuls Arsenal in the Premier League on Tuesday evening and the Blues have received a timely boost with the news that Kai Havertz is returning to the squad after missing last week's match against Brentford.

Frank Lampard confirmed that the German international is in his thinking as he plans his starting line-up for tomorrow's game at the Emirates Stadium, but also pointed out that Havertz is not the only option in attack, with David Fofana also in consideration, while the prospect of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang facing his former club can not be ignored.

'Kai Havertz is in contention for the game, he’s trained this week,' said Lampard. 'We’ll see who starts. I’ve got Auba, I’ve got Kai, I’ve got David Fofana. I’m not going to divulge the team but they're all fit and ready.

“哈佛茲有可能參加比賽,本週他已經參加了訓練。” 蘭帕德說, “讓我們看看誰能先發。我有奧巴梅揚,我有哈佛茲,我有大衛.佛法納。我不會透露球隊的具體情況,但他們都很健康,都準備好了。”

'Possibly Auba’s past with Arsenal might come into my thinking, because we all think a player going back to their old club gives a certain motivation. I haven’t delved into that too much with Auba himself, so I’ll pick that position on my feeling of how we’ve trained and what the team structure looks like.'

“也許奧巴梅揚在阿森納的過去會出現在我的腦海裡,我們都認為一個球員回到老東家會給他某種動力。我還沒有深入研究奧巴梅揚本人的想法,所以我會根據對訓練的感覺和球隊結構的感覺來選擇這個位置。”

Moving back to the more defensive areas of our team, the injury news wasn't so good, with concerns that Kalidou Koulibaly, who hasn't featured for Chelsea since going off with a hamstring problem in the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, could join Reece James and Mason Mount in possibly having played his last game of 2022/23.

'Kouli is out for a while still,' continued Frank. 'I think it will be a tight call for the season to be fair. He’s working away. I’ve been impressed with him actually. He’s a professional, he’s doing his job very well, but unfortunately the injury was a bit of a tough one.

“庫里巴利還要缺陣一段時間,” 蘭帕德繼續說道, “我認為這個賽季他要再上場很不容易,他一直在努力,事實上,我對他印象深刻,他是一名職業球員,他的工作做得很好,但不幸的是,他的傷勢有點嚴重。”

'Cucurella will probably be another two weeks or so. It was a two or three week injury when he first did it a week or so ago. Mason and Reece are the same, there's no update on them.'

“庫庫雷利亞可能還要再等兩週左右,大約一星期前他第一次檢查時,傷癒時間估計是兩到三週。梅森和里斯還是老樣子,沒有最新消息。”

One player who could be lining up against Chelsea is former Blues midfielder Jorginho, who left Stamford Bridge to join Arsenal in January. Our caretaker manager outlined his respect for the midfielder, who Lampard appointed as Chelsea vice-captain during his first spell in the dug-out here.

'I like Jorgi, he’s a very good player and was part of the team that went on to win the Champions League, a central figure in it I think. He’s a good personality in the dressing room to drive the team, a good player and if he plays he’s just another good player in that squad.

“我喜歡若爾尼奧,他是一名非常好的球員,也是球隊贏得歐冠的一員,我認為他是球隊的核心人物。他在更衣室裡很有個性,能推動球隊前進,他是一名好球員,如果他上場,他就是對方球隊中的一名好球員。”

'That’s the options that teams that are challenging for titles have. Sometimes you can change the player and not drop the level, or bring a different type of player in. If that happens then it’s obviously something we’ve just got to deal with.'

“這是那些能挑戰冠軍的球隊所擁有的選擇。有時候可以在不降低球隊水平的情況下更換球員,或換上不同類型的球員。如果發生這種情況,那麼我們必須要處理好。”

Reece James has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring issue, while Mason Mount is still missing after undergoing surgery on a pelvic injury. Armando Broja remains unavailable as he continues his rehabilitation from cruciate ligament damage.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Mohamed Elneny are both ruled out for Arsenal after undergoing surgery on knee injuries earlier this year, while William Saliba is a major doubt after missing their last six fixtures with a back problem.

== Arsenal vs Chelsea suspension ==

There are no suspensions for either side in this match.

As Chelsea have now surpassed 32 games in the Premier League this season, it is no longer possible for players to be suspended due to the number of accumulated yellow cards in 2022/23. However, bans will still be issued for players who are sent off in the competition.

Lampard: Arsenal’s the blueprint

01 MAY 2023

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea should follow Arsenal’s lead in having patience in the search for success.

The Blues take on the Gunners, who are still competing with Manchester City for the Premier League title, at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow evening with Lampard eyeing up a first win as caretaker manager.

Victory would put a dent in Arsenal’s title hopes, but Lampard has been impressed by the work of Mikel Arteta – and the club generally – this season and feels Chelsea should follow their lead in the aim of returning to the summit of English football once again.

Looking specifically at the game ahead, Lampard believes this could be a good time to face the Gunners following their 4-1 defeat to City last time out – meaning Arsenal have now failed to win in their last four games.

‘It could be either way [whether a good time to play Arsenal or not] depending on how you look at things,' Lampard told journalists at our Cobham training base. ‘They’re still very much in the hunt to win the Premier League, they’re a fantastic team who have had a great season.

“現在是否是與兵工場比賽的好時機,取決於如何看待事情。” 蘭帕德在我們的科本訓練基地對記者說。 “他們仍然在爭奪英超冠軍,是一支出色的球隊,已經度過了一個偉大的賽季。”

‘If they’re wounded slightly, then that could give a big reaction but equally if we can make life difficult for them, then of course that could feel different.’

“如果他們出了點問題,那可能會引起很大的反應,但同樣地,如果我們能讓他們感到麻煩,那當然會感覺不同。”

Our caretaker manager believes Chelsea can start challenging with Arsenal for Premier League titles once again in the not-too-distant future, with Lampard looking at both clubs subjectively at his pre-match press conference.

‘I think it's interesting to compare the Arsenal story with ours,’ added Lampard. ‘We all had a little insight into Arsenal and how they operate through the Amazon series and I think what you see is that there's a long process to get to where you want to.

“我認為將兵工廠的故事和我們進行比較是很有趣的,” 蘭帕德補充道, “我們都透過亞馬遜的影集對兵工廠有些深入了解,還有他們的運作方式,而我認為大家看到的是,要達成目標會有一個漫長的過程。”

‘I remember playing Mikel's early teams and sometimes it was a five [at the back], sometimes a four - now you see they have a very clear identity in the way they play and a strong vision in terms of recruitment and the profile of player.

“我記得阿爾特塔早期執教時,有時採用五後衛,有時是四後衛。現在你可以看到,他們在踢球方式上有非常清晰的定位,在引援和球員風格方面也有很強的遠見。”

‘If we talk about it as just this season in isolation, I think you have to go back to the tougher periods. Do we have the possibility to do that here at Chelsea? Yes. Will it take time and through good decisions along the way? Absolutely yes.’

“如果只把這個賽季作為一個單獨的例子來討論,我認為必須先回顧更艱難的時期。我們有可能在卻爾西做到這一點嗎?是的。這需要時間和正確的決策嗎?絕對是的。”

Could Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang start at Arsenal?

02 MAY 2023

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has featured in just 20 of Chelsea’s 44 matches across all competitions this season and Frank Lampard has suggested multiple reasons as to why he believes that has happened.

The former-Arsenal striker is fit and available for selection when we travel to the Emirates Stadium tomorrow evening, in what will be Aubameyang’s first return since leaving the north London club after four years in 2022.

Our caretaker manager admits Aubameyang’s ‘certain motivation’ could see him involved in some form at the home of the Gunners tomorrow but has explained what other factors he must consider before selecting his side.

‘Firstly, he could not play in the two Champions League games [against Real Madrid, due to ineligibility]. He came on against Wolves in the second half and then against Brentford,’ Frank stated.

‘I would say that is a position where, probably more than anywhere on the pitch, you need to be sharp, firing and consistent in your work. That is what makes top strikers. If you are out of the team for a while, when you come back with that lack of edge, it is very difficult. Top strikers play regularly, stay fit, and score goals. It all goes hand in hand.’

The 44-year-old admits he has seen two different sides to the Gabonese forward since he returned as caretaker manager on 6 April, with his undoubted attacking potency often not aligning with his match fitness or sharpness.

‘When I came in, it was clear that Aubameyang had not played a lot of minutes this season. But what was also clear was the level of player we have. I have had no time to look at players in training over big areas, as we’ve had a game coming every few days. I’ve had no time to see where he is at, other than feeling,’ our caretaker manager said.

‘It was good to see him come on against Brentford and look as he looked. I won’t put too much pressure on him because he might still need time. Maybe I, and we, do not have time this season,’ he continued.

In terms of attacking talent, Aubameyang has had more than adequate competition for a spot in our starting XI. Kai Havertz has featured 41 times this term, Raheem Sterling 33. Joao Felix has played in 21 games for the Blues, which is one more than Aubameyang, since arriving in January.

Frank says there are situations behind the scenes that the public do not see, and those situations can often influence his team selection and tactical plan.

‘If you look at the selection of the team, you can see it has changed a lot all season with attacking players and trying to find solutions. It is not as clear as that and that is something where we as coaches can kind of say that is the obvious viewpoint from the outside and we get it. However, when you work every day and talk to the players, you see things physically and where they are at in training, and sometimes that relates to what your selection is,’ the 44-year-old added.

‘With Aubameyang, in a short period, it has been hard for me to gauge that. When you see him come on against Brentford you see the different feeling in the team. One thing for sure is that he is a high-level player but he is clearly also in a situation where he is not at his freshest or sharpest.

‘I want a number nine that we can play off and rely on. It is not ideal for me to play Raheem Sterling or Joao Felix in the number nine position, but we had to against Real Madrid. Kai [Havertz] was missing in one of those matches, so there are a lot of things you have to put together. The solution is not always as easy as it seems. I must see if they are ready enough to play.’

Lampard: I want to play more free-flowing football

02 MAY 2023

Frank Lampard has addressed recent external criticism that he is setting up his Chelsea side too defensively.

Our caretaker manager believes it is far more complicated for a manager than just selecting a side that will play front-foot, attacking football that is both effective and attractive on the eye. He admits that is of course the end goal but there are other areas of the game which are equally important.

‘Coming in here, I think the systems have changed a lot and that hasn’t brought an answer,' explained Lampard. 'I don’t think there is one answer or the other.

'For Real Madrid I got criticised going into the game for being too defensive but for me, that was the only way to approach that game. After 60 minutes, we could have been 1-0 or 2-0 up and then that game and the whole tie looks different.’

Lampard did change tact and opt for three central defenders against Brentford last time out, allowing Cesar Azpilicueta and Ben Chilwell to operate in wing-back roles and provide the width.

The 44-year-old was strong on the notion that he must compromise, taking into account the opposition and the predicted nature of the contest, when he spoke to journalists ahead of the trip to Arsenal tonight.

‘Brentford was different. Managers sometimes have to compromise. At the moment, with where we are, there are things we have to look at, and we think “Well, that didn’t work properly so we cannot be that fluid like we have tried to be”. We went to Wolves with 4-3-3 and we didn’t win. After the events, there are not always absolute answers,' he said.

‘Do I want to play more free-flowing football? Yes. When I was here before people maybe thought we were almost too free-flowing at times. I know that when I looked at the underlying nature of how we were playing in my first season here, we had one of the highest xG totals in the league and one of the lowest xG against, but we were conceding more goals than we should have done. There are different reasons sometimes.

‘In this short term, I want to find consistency in our work but that has been challenging in five games. Sometimes you are having to put pieces of the puzzle together.’

Every word Frank Lampard said on Arsenal vs Chelsea, Aubameyang, Havertz and Jorginho

By Scott Trotter, Chelsea writer - 10:47, 1 MAY 2023

.Do you think they really are still in with a shout of the title?

Of course. There's enough games left for jeopardy to be there at the top end and bottom end of the table I would say. I think they're fully in it. Manchester City are showing incredible form and we all respect that. You also have to respect what Arsenal have done this year and they'll believe they're still in it and rightly so.

.Chelsea a club in distress?

Well we’re not in a great moment are we? I've been able to live this now for a few weeks and I also lived maybe 10 years of incredible success here and saw that continue, and was part of it again and then saw it continue.. I think it can be pretty normal, if you look at history of all of the top clubs in the league, of moments of tough periods. Our opponents tomorrow are a good example of that. They want to challenge for Premier Leagues and they are now. It's been a while for them. We have to put perspective on it and understand we have to try and work on all aspects as a club to get back to the feeling and position of where we want to be. That's not a given in this league and there's a lot of work to do.

.Still relish getting up and coming to work?

Absolutely. I was eyes open when I came to this job. I'm too experienced in football as a player and now as a coach to understand things don't necessarily change overnight in terms of results. Our job is to work on performance and mentality of the group, to try bring back good feeling, firstly. Good feeling only comes with hard work. So I enjoy that challenge and I was very aware of the challenges coming in. I'm very proud to manage the club, I love being here and I enjoy doing my job.

The reality of football is, your career will not be full of successes. People will always remember successes, but part of the job is the tougher moments whether you’re a manager or player. You can’t always control results, but you can control how you work everyday. I enjoy that aspect of it.

.Have you ever seen a dressing room so low?

They are low on confidence and also low on performance, so I think I shouldn’t distinguish that and make it all on confidence. You can only work to get a level of performance to then bring confidence back. I've been here in period when the confidence has been low because nobody likes losing games. I had moments here as a player where we dropped as a collective, and we had to lift it. Fortunately in those period when you look back, we managed to get it back through hard work, level of the squad. We changed manager a lot in some of those periods.

It's certainly not one to try and compare generations or eras. It’s just different now. In terms of the modern player, squad that we have here and what expectations are. The only thing we can do is consider the moment now and future as a club and work hard to get the squad where we want it and also to get the players performing so that confidence word is a not a big word like I’m using in my press conference every week. At a club like this, you should work hard and the level of player, you shouldn’t be talking about team confidence. It’s clearly an issue at the minute which needs to be addressed. It only gets addressed with self responsibility in the first place throughout the club to make it better.

.Chelsea fans defended you to Brentford fans, even though results haven't been good, are you enjoying the connection again?

I’ve enjoyed that and that's very normal, I expect that from Brentford fans in a moment of good feeling for them. I said before and after the game what a good story they've been in the Premier League, so I certainly won’t moan about that. I think they were probably just reminded by the Chelsea fans that this club has had a lot of success in the last 20 years and they're probably trying to work to their version of success.

.The 60 minutes against Real, a framework for Arsenal?

Every game is different, tactically, that will be different. In terms of togetherness of a group that connected on the pitch, the first 60 minutes versus Madrid was very, very good other than the last bit, so we have to find that last bit. We have to be connected and show that same motivation through the team and energy because Arsenal are a fantastic team, with very good players and a great team ethic. That's what makes great teams. We have to match that as a start, like we did against Madrid, to try to get a result.
