Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest press conference: Fofana back from injury and latest on Chilwell, Mount and Koulibaly returns

12 MAY 2023

Speaking to the media ahead of Chelsea's next Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest, Frank Lampard confirmed that Wesley Fofana is in contention to start again following injury and outlined his plans to get several other players back on the pitch before the end of the season.

There have been a number of injuries restricting Frank Lampard's team selection options recently, especially in defence, but our caretaker manager was happy to reveal that at least one of those players could be back in the team when we host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge tomorrow, although there was mixed news on the other names on Chelsea's injury list.

Lampard pointed to a trio of England internationals - Ben Chilwell, Mason Mount and Reece James - as players who have been a big miss for the Blues in recent weeks, a view underlined when Chilwell limped off with a fresh injury in last week's win at Bournemouth.

However, Frank hopes that at least two of them may be able to feature again before the end of this season.

'Chilly's not fit,' confirmed Lampard. 'We’re hoping Chilly might be okay for the last game or two of the season but that’s a tight call. It’s a similar story with Mason, maybe a little bit similar with Reece. I feel like Reece might be slightly behind that. So we’re obviously chasing it a bit now.

“奇爾維爾無法出戰,” 蘭帕德證實, “我們希望他能在本賽季的最後一、兩場比賽中復出,但這很難說。梅森的情況也很相似,也許和里斯有點相似。我覺得里斯可能有點落後了,現在我們正在努力。”

'I feel for Chilly and all the players who want to play and represent the club. Obviously we miss big players. Reece, Chilly and Mason are big England internationals who have been successful with the club and I’ve not really had the benefit of them in this short period.

“我同情奇爾維爾和所有想要代表俱樂部踢球的球員。很明顯,我們有一些重要球員缺陣。里斯、奇利和梅森都是重要的英格蘭國腳,他們都曾在俱樂部取得了成功,但在短時間裡,我並沒有真正從他們身上受益。”

'Chilly maybe a little bit but Mason hasn’t really contributed at his top level where he’s fully fit. But it is what it is.'

“也許奇利快了,但梅森還沒有回復到最佳狀態,事情就是如此。”

There was better news on the availability of Wesley Fofana against Forest, but it seems like a similar race against time to get Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella back in action.

'Wes has been training this week so he’s good. Marc won’t be fit for this game and again probably questionable in line with the others for that final week of the season.

“魏斯這週一直在訓練,所以他狀態很好。馬克不會在這場比賽中復出,至於賽季的最後一週,他能否和其他球員一起出戰也可能是個問題。”

'Kalidou has trained with us the last couple of days, a little bit managed, not full training, so again looking at the next week when we have three games in six days or whatever.

“庫里巴利在過去的幾天裡和我們一起訓練,有些特別管理,他還沒有完全訓練,所以下週再看看,我們在 6 天內有 3 場比賽。”

'So all of those hopefully will be in a bit of contention, but of course whether they will be match fit is another question.'

“因此所有這些人都有可能參加比賽,但他們是否能適應比賽是另一個問題。”

== Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest injury list ==

Marcus Bettinelli has been missing due to injury in our last few games, while Armando Broja remains unavailable as he continues his rehabilitation from cruciate ligament damage.

Nottingham Forest have a lengthy injury list of their own, with Giulian Biancone, Emmanuel Dennis, Dean Henderson, Scott McKenna, Neco Williams and Chris Wood all ruled out for the remainder of the season. Serge Aurier is a doubt after picking up an injury in their last match, but Jack Colback, Renan Lodi, Gustavo Scarpa and Jonjo Shelvey could feature after returning to training this week.

== Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest suspension ==

There are no suspensions for either side in this match.

As Chelsea have now surpassed 32 games in the Premier League this season, it is no longer possible for players to be suspended due to the number of accumulated yellow cards in 2022/23. However, bans will still be issued for players who are sent off in the competition.

Lampard: Lewis has a chance

12 MAY 2023

Frank Lampard has stated that Lewis Hall is in contention to feature against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

The Cobham graduate, who can play in midfield or at left-back, could come into the side in place of the injured duo of Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell to face Steve Cooper’s Reds after impressing Lampard in training this week.

‘Lewis has a chance [to start],’ Lampard said at his pre-match press conference. ‘I was tempted to put him on last week but with the nature of the game and how it was set, I just felt that the experience of Azpi was more suitable at that point.

‘I’ll view this game on its merits but I’ve been really impressed with Lewis and the way he’s trained. He’s a really good player, a very talented player. He perhaps needs to come out of himself a little bit more and trust how good he is.

‘I have been really impressed and he is definitely in the running for the last four games to be involved.’

The versatile operator had initially been included in the England Under-20 squad for the upcoming World Cup in Argentina, along with four of his Chelsea team-mates, however the decision was made together by Lewis, Lampard and the club to keep the youngster at Stamford Bridge for the end-of-season run-in.

‘My decision is he needs to stay here and be with us for the final four games,’ Lampard said of the reasoning behind pulling Hall out of international duty. ‘We’ve got injuries to both our left-backs and that leaves us in a position where we want and need Lewis.

‘He would have wanted to play for his country and would be honoured to represent at this tournament, so obviously that’s a good thing.

‘However, at the same time, he’s come through our Academy and would be desperate for an opportunity. That’s what I sense from him and I think that the decision made from both sides is the right one.’

Lampard on his faith in the process and why Madueke form is sign of progress

13 MAY 2023

Frank Lampard explains how the abundance of talent and potential in the Chelsea squad, plus the things he has seen behind the scenes since returning to Stamford Bridge, leave him in no doubt the club will be just as successful in the future as it was during his playing career.

It hasn’t been the easiest of homecomings for Frank Lampard since returning to Chelsea as caretaker manager for the remainder of the 2022/23 season, but the Blues legend picked up the first win of his second spell in the dug-out when we triumphed 3-1 away at Bournemouth last week.

He has four games left of the current campaign and his tenure to add to those three points, starting with today’s Premier League fixture at home against Nottingham Forest.

However, speaking ahead of that game, he was keen to point out that in the Blues’ current situation in the midst of widespread change on and off the pitch at the start of a new era, with Champions League qualification now beyond us, some things which go unnoticed outside the club are arguably more important than points at this moment in time.

‘The more you do this job you realise the good and the bad, the things you can control and the things you can’t,’ he said. ‘Sometimes you can’t control the results. Sometimes you’re happy working on things people might not see, which are small positive things behind the scenes, working closely with players, seeing things that are developing behind the scenes.

‘I’ve been impressed with the intention of the club and where it wants to get to – and I think it will get there – and I think we need to work really hard with the group going forward, with the squad and the players and the talent that we have, because that talent has to be converted into end product in this league. Those steps are already in motion and that might not always be visible right now but it’s certainly a process.’

When asked for an example of the progress which gives him confidence in Chelsea’s future Lampard highlighted the recent performances of January signing Noni Madueke, who scored his first goal for the club at Arsenal before putting in his best performance for the Blues so far in last week’s win over Bournemouth.

‘There’s certainly talent in the building,’ added Frank. ‘I think Noni’s a good example of an individual that in the first week of training was a clear talent but I wanted to see a bit more.

‘I had that conversation with him and he showed me more and he’s come into the games and showed me his personality as much as his talent, to come in, in a tough moment, take the ball and show glimpses of his talent.

‘It won’t just stop with him, but those sort of players need stability around them to take forward their own game and they haven’t had that this season. So that’s something I’ve seen and I think probably other people have seen this season.’

However, beyond everything, it is Lampard’s knowledge and experience of the club which places our future success beyond doubt in his mind, as he passionately explained why he sees similarities between the current Chelsea and the one he first joined as a player back in 2001, before winning the lot at Stamford Bridge.

‘My own life experience, I signed for Chelsea when we were a top-six or top-eight team and little did I know it but 15 years later when I left I came out with medals and trophies all over the place because of how the club moved forward.

I’m not just patting myself on the back there, I was part of a huge process and saw this club grow into the most successful club in the modern era of the Premier League at that time.

‘So there are a lot of great things about this club and the old saying “form is temporary, class is permanent” is quite good in football and when you see a club of Chelsea’s size, and I see fantastic intentions to take the club forward.

‘A lot of big clubs go through this process in some way, shape or form and the more successful you’ve been the more headlines it gets when you go into that moment. So the club just needs to take every step forward as it goes, but it’s an incredible club. This is a huge football club no matter what happens in the next month, six months, two years, three years. This is always going to be a successful football club now and I can’t speak highly enough of it. I would say that, obviously, because of my connection with the club, but I absolutely believe it.’

Every word Frank Lampard said on Ben Chilwell injury, N'Golo Kante Chelsea future and Lewis Hall

By Sam Truelove, Content Editor - UPDATED 17:21, 12 MAY 2023

.On N'Golo Kante he seemed to indicate in an interview with Sky Sports News yesterday that he will be willing and happy to sign a new deal here. Is that your understanding and how important is he? OK he has had injury problems and he is not as young as he was but he is still a top quality player.

I've got no understanding as to N'Golo speaking. I don't know about the situation. He's obviously a very, very high level player I've said that many times.

.Working with him again he still has lots to offer?

Absolutely. Every game he has played for us in this short period is similar to N'Golo at his level and he has been a huge asset for the club we know that.

.Training on the back of a win. Slightly different feeling?

It's a boost. It's a nice feeling. The players have to strive for that feeling again. That's what builds winning teams and at the moment we are obviously in some form of a building process because of the difficulty of the season so it was a small step forward.

.You said before about playing for pride, playing for the badge. Obviously there isn't really anything in terms of the position in the league to play for but there's integrity isn't there because you're going to have a big say as a team in all areas of the league. Is that something you talk to your players about?

No, not in that context. Just that we play for pride in every game, no matter what the consequences are for anybody else. It's our consequence that we are concerned about.

.You kept Everton up last season and you can contribute to that again by beating Forest, can't you?

Maybe but Everton's fate is in their own hands at this point I think. It's not in my concerns really. I lived that life last year and have a lot of connection to the club in the year that I had there was a really enjoyable time for me. But you know as much as I will support them from afar it's not in my concern as Chelsea manager but of course I hope they get the job done because I know what that feeling is.

.Any manager update?

No.

.Charlie Holland has been a bit of a internet sensation this week. It's not unusual to bring the youngsters in as a bit of a reward and get some experience of the top level.

It was a day where our U21s and U18s had stopped training, they had broken up already. Charlie is the captain of the U14s and had a very successful season and he came over and took part in the warm up and the boxes and then the internet did the rest and made it more of a story. It's nice to have a link to the academy and it's important for young players to have the feeling that if they do well they can have small inputs but with Charlie that was the situation. Another day it may be another player who can come in and get that valuable experience in a small way and we hope that obviously can invigorate the young players knowing those things are possible.

.You said there was a change in the mood this week. Is it as simple as that at this point? A win changes the mood?

I think in football it can be but you also can't get carried away with a win because as much as I sometimes look at a defeat and see positives I can look at a win and see a lot of things that we need to improve. It's nice for that general feel of confidence within the building but in terms of where we want to be it is a small step. I said it after the game so it's just nice it's something that has to be carried on with and just by celebrating it all week is not going to be the answer. Another game comes in the Premier League with a team fighting for their Premier League lives and we have to match that intensity and desire because those are the rules in the Premier League.

.Now you have had some time to reflect on the win, was there anything you can pinpoint from the performance that maybe was missing before?

No I think it is hard to directly compare performances. I think simple form of football is when you take chances you can win games and a lot of other stuff can be glossed over for good or for bad. So in this game we score from a set piece, which is something we haven't been doing enough this season. We were also clinical in the third goal which kills off the game and if you look at certain games we have played in my time and I won't speak for before too much but we have opportunities to be clinical at that end of the pitch and if you can't do that then it is very hard to get into the top part, top eight, top six, top four if you don't have a real clinical edge at the top end of the pitch. You can't conjure that up in a short period it has to be developed, worked on, recruited - all those things. But we were more clinical, I thought the performance was good but it is not exactly where we want to be. In this period for me it won't be a question of trying to take us exactly where I want to be because the time isn't there but it was a nice step.

.Forest won the other day and they are still very much in the relegation battle. What kind of test do you think it is to play against a team that is fighting for their lives?

A really big one. Like they have given big teams recently in Liverpool and Manchester United and winning against Southampton and beating a team at the level of Brighton. You have to give them complete respect. They have a strong squad, strong coach, effective way of playing. I think they have not changed but they have evolved through the season. in terms of their style which is very effective. A lot of speed on the counter attack, very threatening in terms of set pieces and some of the more direct stuff which is fair play because they are fighting for everything.

.Home form hasn't been as good as I'm sure you would have wanted it to be in the last few matches. The game is at home tomorrow, is that starting to weigh a little heavy on the players?

I think if form has not been great and it's probably since I've been here and preceding that, it's very normal and human that can build up some nervousness amongst players and fans. The only way through that is to dig in and try and do the right thing. I've been there as a player many a time and that is what the players have to do simple as that and then the crowd will go with them and then with that you can become a bit of a force and we are obviously striving for that.

.Thoughts on the timing of the tournament?

Yeah it feels a mystery to me. I will be careful with it because I didn't really think about the tournament a month or so ago, probably because I've come here and then all of a sudden the question is there of young players leaving at the most crucial part of the season. There you can see what it means for us with Lewis and Carney (Chukwuemeka) and there will be other clubs in the league, players who are playing regularly... it just doesn't make sense in terms of clashing with the end of our season but that is all I know about it. But from our point of view having the power of being able to keep our player is an important thing and maybe that probably then jeopardises the World Cup itself and that is why they should look at it because they would want the best players there and from our point of view we need our best players in this moment.
