Havertz shares his frustrations from Dortmund loss

16 FEB 2023

Frustration was the overriding emotion for Kai Havertz when reflecting on our narrow Champions League first leg defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues were defeated 1-0 by the Bundesliga side, with Karim Adeyemi’s second-half strike seeing Dortmund take a slender lead to Stamford Bridge for the return leg next month.

Despite the defeat, the Blues performed well and created plenty of opportunities to win the game and the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal is what disappointed Kai overall.

‘It’s frustrating to lose because I thought we played quite well,’ Havertz said when speaking post-match. ‘We came here to win the game, or at least draw, but in the end we have lost and it’s just really frustrating for us.

‘Their goal was a mistake from us and we knew that Adeyemi is a fast player, especially on counter-attacks. So that was disappointing.

‘We created plenty of chances and on another day, we could have scored a couple of goals and the tie would look so different.

‘I don’t think we should be too unhappy with our performance because we created the opportunities, but it’s just frustrating that we couldn’t take any of them. We have to look at that and try to improve on that front.’

Graham Potter handed Chelsea Champions League debuts to Joao Felix, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk, with the trio all impressing.

Havertz believes the new signings are beginning to gel well with the team and that getting back to winning ways is just around the corner.

‘We have had a lot of new players join in this window and I think you can definitely see us improving and getting that chemistry with one another now,’ added the German.

‘This was another step forward, even though we lost. The result of course is the most important thing and it wasn’t what we wanted, but I think we showed some good signs – especially in the second half – and we need to build on that.’

Chilwell: Positives to take

17 FEB 2023

Ben Chilwell has reiterated that our Champions League knockout tie with Borussia Dortmund is far from over, with the left-back believing we can take heart from our display in Germany.

Chelsea were edged out 1-0 by the Bundesliga side, with Karim Adeyemi netting the only goal of the game just after the hour mark, although the scoreline could have looked a lot different if the Blues had taken some of the many chances carved out at Signal Iduna Park.

Joao Felix had two great opportunities in the first half – firing over the bar first before then striking the woodwork – while Kalidou Koulibaly and Reece James were both denied goals in the second half.

Those positive signs are what Chilwell wants to focus on, with the left-back keen to take that spirited performance into the return leg at Stamford Bridge next month.

‘At the end of the day, we’ve lost the game which is the main thing but overall I think we can take plenty of positives from our performance,’ Chilwell explained after the game.

‘I think after a while we got to grips with the game and created a lot of chances, especially in the second half. It was a much better team performance and I think you can see we are starting to gel more.

‘We’re disappointed to have lost the game but there’s still plenty to play for in the tie. We’ve got a second leg to come at Stamford Bridge and we just need to take the positives from this performance into that game when it comes.’

Graham Potter handed Chelsea Champions League debuts to Joao Felix, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk and with the trio impressing, Chilwell feels that the new recruits are starting to acclimatise to life at Stamford Bridge.

‘When you look at the talent in the team, it’s really exciting,’ added Ben. ‘We have the quality to play fast-flowing football, with plenty of attacking options. It was a frustrating night in the sense we created a lot of chances but couldn’t get a goal, but I think when you look at the quality we have then there’s no reason to panic.

‘We want to play ‘the Chelsea way’ and with the players we’ve brought in alongside those already here, I think you can see what the manager is trying to implement.

‘Our second-half performance was much more like that and although we are disappointed to go back to Stamford Bridge for the second leg without anything to show in terms of the scoreline, there are plenty of positives for us to take from the game.’
