Potter: Managing this squad will test my qualities

Graham Potter says he is relishing the opportunity of getting to work with his new players in the second half of the season, while accepting he has a huge challenge on his hands by keeping all of his squad content.
The Blues made eight January signings this winter, with just midfielder Jorginho departing from the club.
The new signings have also been greeted back on the training pitch at Cobham with returning players from injury. Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all been reintegrated back into the side recently, with four other senior players still sidelined.
Potter says he is looking at the positives of having such a big squad, rather than the negatives.
‘January is very complicated. You want things to be more optimal but at the same time, we know we are in a transition period. It was always a case of managing in challenging circumstances, but I am not complaining. It will test my attributes and qualities, and that is something to be happy about,' Potter said following our draw with Fulham.
‘Yeah of course [any coach would love to be in this position]. It is a fantastic football club and really exciting. You should never really compare yourself to somebody else, as you don’t know their circumstances and context.
‘In any job, there comes challenges, but clearly also positives. Anybody that works for Chelsea should be excited and be grateful.’
All eight of our winter window signings are aged 23 or younger, exactly half of which under the age of 21, and our head coach says the club targeted a specific profile.
‘You can see the profile of players we have brought in, they are exciting for both now and the future. They can improve and get better as the team develops. It is an investment from both parties and is a long-term commitment. We need some stability, and we need to progress the team, which is the challenge.’

Potter unfazed by opposition jibes

The criticism Chelsea’s transfer activity in the January window has drawn from opposition managers and supporters is understandable according to Graham Potter, with our head coach relaxed in the knowledge he has one of the most desirable jobs in football.

In recent days Jurgen Klopp among others has spoken out in the media about the investments the Blues made last month, and then during Friday night’s goalless draw with Fulham plenty of the travelling support sang ‘What a waste of money’ in the direction of Enzo Fernandez.

Potter says he has never envied clubs with greater resources and he is bullish about the inevitable jibes that will come in his and the team’s direction in the coming weeks and months.

‘It’s normal,’ he said. ‘We’ve spent the money we’ve spent. The media aren’t going to let that go under the radar. All of football will be singing that song, that’s for sure. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. There’s free speech, which is good. I don’t worry about that.

‘You’re best to compare to yourself rather than somebody else because you don’t know the context or the situation. I also understand that’s the world we’re in, and that’s fine by me.

‘Most managers would love to be in my position,’ added Potter. ‘It’s a fantastic football club, and a really exciting time. You should never really compare yourself to somebody else because you don’t know their circumstances. All you can do is try to improve yourself.
