James: ‘Football doesn’t work like that’
18 FEB 2023
Three games into his belated start to 2023, Reece James is feeling good.
With each of those matches played it is clear our highly rated right-sider is nearing the outstanding form he enjoyed before his recent injury problem, and he is keen to make up for lost time, starting with today’s hosting of Southampton.
‘It's a great feeling to be back out there and trying to help the team as much as I can,’ James says.
‘It was a tough four or five months, missing a lot of football, missing a major tournament and the team being in a difficult position at the moment as well. But it's great to be back out there and trying to enjoy football again and helping the team.
‘The highs are always very high but when you're injured and not playing it is very dampening. You can't do what you love so it takes a lot out of you.’
James returned to a Chelsea side that has a very different look to it given the influx of new young talent in January, suddenly placing him as one of the more experienced players from a Premier League point of view. He discusses recent team form.
‘Things will change as time goes on. We're still a fairly new squad, we've had a lot of new players come in and everyone expects things to happen overnight just because we spend x-amount of money. Football doesn’t work like that, things take time. People have to adapt and change to new countries, new cultures. With time we’ll progress and get to where we want to be.
‘A lot of the new players are also young for the future. As we all gain more experience I think we're going to compete for many trophies and titles in the coming years.’
The man charged with overseeing that trajectory is of course Graham Potter.
‘He is a great manager to work under,’ praises James. ‘He's a very good person and I think that helps a lot as a manager. The relationship and how well you get on plays a big part in getting the most out the players.
‘He laid his cards out very early when he arrived and that helped us a lot. Even in the spell we are in transparency is always there. We always know our targets and our end goals.’
