Chelsea vs Leeds press conference: Potter confirms Mount and James injury concerns, updates on Kante, Mendy and Azpi returns

03 MAR 2023

Graham Potter has revealed concerns that Mason Mount and Reece James could both miss tomorrow's match against Leeds United after picking up injuries, but provided the latest news on when N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy and Cesar Azpilicueta could be back in action for Chelsea.

Chelsea host Leeds United at Stamford Bridge hoping to bounce back after suffering back-to-back Premier League defeats in our last two matches, at home against Southampton and away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Before discussing the latest injury news, Graham Potter explained why he feels it is his job to take personal responsibility for the team's form and putting it right moving forward.

'The results are the results and ultimately the coach is responsible, so we have to improve those, that’s the first thing,' he said. 'Then you have to look at the performance of the team and how we can improve that because generally if you improve the performance of the team you can get better results. That’s my responsibility and that’s what I have to do.

“結果就是結果,最終是教練負責,所以我們必須改進,這是首要的。” 波特說, “然後我們必須看看球隊的表現,以及如何改善,因為通常如果改善了球隊的表現,就能得到更好的結果。這是我的責任,也是我必須要做的。”

'As the head coach you have to take that responsibility, that’s the job. I don’t think it’s a total responsibility but it’s certainly a huge responsibility. The results haven’t been good enough, we know that and we accept that. There’s no hiding behind it. We have to do better and that starts with me.'

“身為主教練,我必須承擔起這個責任,這就是工作。我不認為這是完全的責任,但肯定是巨大的責任。結果還不夠好,我們知道而且接受這點。沒有什麼可以隱藏的,我們必須做得更好,從我開始。”

Thiago Silva was added to our injury list when he was forced off with a knee problem in last week's game at Tottenham and Potter confirmed that the Brazilian could be out for up to six weeks.

He also updated on the progress of Edouard Mendy, N'Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta, as they continue to work towards their own return from injury.

'Thiago will be around that time, I’m not sure when it will be exactly,' explained Potter. 'Mendy’s making progress but he's not yet joined full training with the group.

“蒂亞戈會在那個時候回來,我不確定具體是什麼時候,” 波特解釋道, “門迪正在取得進步,但他還沒有加入團隊的全面訓練。”

'N’Golo had his first full training session today but obviously still needs time. Azpi’s made progress, but he's still not through the protocols we have to do after a head injury like that.'

“坎特今天進行了第一次完整訓練,但顯然還需要時間。阿斯皮利奎塔已經取得了進展,但他仍然沒有完成球員在頭部受傷後必須修養的時間規範。”

There was also bad news on another potential addition to our list of absentees, with Potter revealing an issue for Reece James.

'Reece has got a tightness in his hamstring, we’re just assessing him, so he’s doubtful for tomorrow as well.'

“里斯的腿筋有點緊,我們在對他進行評估,所以明天的比賽他也不確定能出戰。”

James wasn't the only new name causing Potter concern, with news that Mason Mount could miss Leeds' visit to the Bridge, while our head coach also addressed questions about Mount's contract situation.

'Mason’s had a problem with his lower abdomen area, the bone, so he’ll miss the game tomorrow. We hope it won’t be too long but tomorrow will be too soon.

“梅森的下腹部有傷病,骨頭的問題,所以他將錯過明天的比賽。我們希望不要太久,但明天對他來說太快了。”

'Mason, for us, has been great to work with. He’s been top. He’s suffering like the rest of us because we want to do better, we want better results.

“對我們來說,和梅森合作很棒,他一直是頂尖的,他和我們一樣受挫,因為我們想做得更好,我們想要更好的結果。

'In terms of the contract, that’s between him and the club. I’m the head coach and I get on with my job to work with the players and help them improve and at the moment we’re not doing that as well as we’d like, so that’s the focus for me.'

“在合約方面,這是他和俱樂部之間的事情。我是主教練,我要繼續自己的工作,和球員們一起工作,幫助他們進步,目前我們做得沒有那麼好,因此這才是我的重點。”

Armando Broja remains unavailable to Potter as he continues to work on his rehabilitation following injury. Mateo Kovacic could return after missing our last game due to illness, while Christian Pulisic is back in light training and building towards a return.

Leeds will be without Stuart Dallas, who underwent surgery in January, while Rodrigo and Adam Forshaw are not expected to return from injury until later this month. However, manager Javi Gracia hopes to have Pascal Struijk, Luis Sinisterra and Liam Cooper available again at Stamford Bridge.

Potter on transferring good training to good results, and thanks for Chelsea fans’ support

03 MAR 2023

Graham Potter has been discussing the disappointment of seeing the positive work his players have been producing in training going unrewarded on matchday, a trend he hopes will stop when Chelsea play Leeds tomorrow.

The head coach is desperate to turn our recent run of results around, and he knows that must first start with what happens at Cobham between games.

Potter also recognised the work that goes on behind the scenes ultimately counts for very little when it comes to the output during the real thing at the weekend, but that doesn’t stop him feeling frustrated at our recent inability to convert good training sessions into Premier League points.

‘We are seeing a lot of positives day to day, but they haven’t been able to transfer themselves onto the pitch in terms of results,’ Potter said today.

‘Daily training, the spirit of the players, the group coming together, that’s all positive, but it’s hard to talk positive because results aren’t good.

‘Performances haven’t been as bad as results, but nevertheless we know the business we’re in and we haven’t liked the results.

‘The boys have taken responsibility, they know where we’re at,’ added Potter. ‘We all admit we can do better, firstly me, and the players are honest enough to know they can do better as well.

‘We’re all there, we’re all fighting, but we need to show it on the pitch and that has to manifest itself in three points.

Leeds are the fifth visitors to Stamford Bridge in 2023. We have scored just one goal in front of our home support this calendar year, Kai Havertz’s winner against Crystal Palace back on January 15.

Potter says he completely understands why Chelsea supporters who go every week, as well as those following from around the world, are feeling edgy at the moment, and he has them in his mind when he targets a turnaround in fortunes.

‘We’ve been fighting this week to prepare well, to make sure we’re in a position where we can give a performance our supporters are happy with.

‘Fans care. It’s an emotion, and however that comes out is understandable. We’re hurting as well, but we also know they are. We thank them for their support because it’s been there completely.

‘When you lose 1-0 at home to the team that’s bottom of the league, you expect a negative response. No complaints about that at all. Our supporters have been fair and supportive when they can.

‘We haven’t been good enough at the moment to give them enough to be really excited about with the team, and that’s where the work is.’

Every word Graham Potter said on his Chelsea future, Silva, James, Azpilicueta, Mount, Kante

By Adam Newson, Chief Chelsea correspondent - UPDATED 15:37, 3 MAR 2023

.Do you see Leeds and Borussia Dortmund as make-or-break games?

"I don't tend to look at it in any way like that. I tend to focus on the next match. We know the situation we're in – and that is to improve the results we've had. That is my responsibility. They've not been good enough so that is all I focus on now."

.Richard Masters said yesterday about Chelsea to judge the club in three or four years, do you that is fair given there have been so many changes?

"Again, my position is that I need to focus on the next game. Whatever the discussions are over the long term, that isn't for me. My discussion is tomorrow's match, focus on that, and help the team. We understand the moment we're in and we need to improve."

.Could it perhaps be positive to miss out on European football for one season?

"You can’t think at any point that it’s a positive to not be in Europe. That’s clear. We are a club with ambition and a desire to compete at the top. At the moment, we are not and we have to address that. That starts with tomorrow's match."

.Is your message to the players tomorrow to be brave against Leeds?

"It's always the approach but sometimes these things happen in football. The Premier League is the best league in the world and it's the best league because anybody can beat anybody. We have full respect for the competition but the focus should be on us. We need to understand the position we're in and we've been fighting this week and prepare well so we're in a position to conduct ourselves well and give a performance our supporters are happy with."

.The high press of Leeds, is your midfield going to have to be more resolute?

"We know Leeds, since they've been in the Premier League, have always played with that intensity. It's something we have to deal with. We're aware of it and have to understand what the opponent brings, but we have to perform well and be ourselves. We're fighting for the points."

.What has it been like on the training pitch? How challenging is it to work with so many players?

"Not really. We're coaches and it's our job to work with the players we have. I think we've done it well. Training has been good, the spirit in the team has been as good as it can be when we're in a period of results we're in.

"The boys have taken responsibility and understand where we're at. We all admit we can do better – firstly me – and the players are honest enough as well to know they can do better. We're all there and fighting but we need to show it on the pitch and that has to manifest itself with three points."

.Spoken to the owners today, still giving you the same message of support?

"There is support and, of course, I've spoken to them. But I'm not going to hide behind that. The results haven't been good enough for us and I'm responsible for that. When you're a coach, if the results are good you accept the criticism and noise that comes with it. My job is to stay with the team, stay focused, try to prepare the team as well as I can, and win the game tomorrow."

.How do you focus on the next game with all the noise that is going on around you?

"By not listening too much to it is the honest answer and taking it step by step, the next training session, the next meeting, the next conversation with a player. I focus on the next thing and then bit by bit, you get through the days and weeks and it’s how you work. We’re fighting for improvement and to do better. The spirit is there in the team and among the staff. The spirit is there in me but as I’ve said, talking is one thing but we have to do it on the pitch."

.Is tomorrow simply about winning by any means necessary?

"The most important thing is Chelsea can win tomorrow. That is the most important thing. It’s easy to say ‘do something else and you win’. Clearly, there is always a thought process there but you can end up losing twice. There are no guarantees and that is the beauty of football. It’s certainly the beauty of the Premier League.

"It’s the toughest league in the world and a game that is hard to control. You have to fight and understand when you’re in a tough moment. You have to stick together and work hard, which is what the players have been doing this week. We’ll give it our best and we’ll try to win."
