Chilwell disappointed with draw

19 MAR 2023

‘Frustrating’ and ‘disappointing’ were two of the words used by Ben Chilwell to sum up the feeling of the dressing room following Chelsea’s 2-2 home draw with Everton.

The Blues looked on course to claim another victory after goals from Joao Felix and Kai Havertz either side of a Abdoulaye Doucoure header, before Ellis Simms came off the bench to claim a share of the spoils for the Toffees by netting in the 90th minute.

It meant Graham Potter’s side couldn’t record a fourth consecutive win and Chilwell, who impressed again in a left wing-back role, explaining to reporters after the game what the mood inside the camp was like following the stalemate.

‘We’re disappointed not to win the game and really frustrated to concede so late on,’ said the England international. ‘I think we dominated in the first half. We created a lot of chances but unfortunately we just couldn’t take them.

‘Then in the second half, I think we probably played into their hands a little bit. The game became a bit of a fight, it became a lot scrappier and that suited them.

‘They got their equaliser which gave them a boost but when Kai scored a great penalty, we thought that would put us where we needed to be to see the game out. So that’s really frustrating.

‘We didn’t keep the ball well enough, they’ve scored on the counter-attack to make it 2-2 and we’re all very disappointed with that.’

Chilwell admitted that the side we really disappointed to concede from a corner, with Doucoure able to flick home a header from close range to level the scores following Joao Felix’s opener.

‘We’re disappointed to concede from a set-piece,’ added Ben. ‘We knew that would probably be where they’d be most dangerous from and we worked on that leading up to the game, so that’s very disappointing.

‘Listen, we want to win every game but particularly those at home. We drive high standards at this club and we need to see those sort of games out. We’ve been on a good run recently, we’re definitely heading in the right direct, but this is a minor setback that we need to put right after the international break.’

Speaking further about our first goalscorer Joao Felix, Chilwell had nothing but praise for his team-mate and labelled the Portugal international as a ‘brilliant’ player.

‘Joao took his goal very well but you expect that from him because he’s a brilliant player,’ Chilwell stated.

‘He’s very technically gifted but he also brings so much to the team in terms of his work rate. He’s been a bit unlucky in recent weeks, he’s hit the woodwork a few times, but he gets himself into great positions and he deserved his goal.’

Joao Felix on playing with confidence and fixing errors

19 MAR 2023

Joao Felix believes Chelsea are now playing with more authority even if we didn’t get the result he thought we merited against Everton.

The Blues had to settle for a point despite leading the Toffees twice, with the opening goal scored by the Portuguese his first at Stamford Bridge.

The 2-2 draw brought an end to our winning run in March and means we head into the international break on a frustrating note, but Joao Felix is still upbeat about the state of this Chelsea team ahead of the final two months of the campaign.

‘We felt we deserved the three points,’ he said after yesterday’s game. ‘We did a great match. We are back. The team are playing good in my opinion. We just need to fix some errors. That happens.

‘The team is playing with more confidence. We are confident about the games we have ahead. We need to keep working and fix some mistakes we did during the game.’

On an individual level, Joao Felix has been seriously unlucky in front of goal in his time as a Chelsea player so far, regularly hitting the woodwork or being denied by the offside flag.

Having opened his Blues account at West Ham last month, the attacker scored for the first time on home soil with a well-placed left-footed strike that just evaded Jordan Pickford. This time he got the rub of the green off the woodwork, the ball rolling into the net via the inside of the right-hand post.

‘I just shot like I’m doing the last games!’ he explained with a glint in his eye. ‘This time it went in! I’m very happy with that and I want to keep it going now and score more.’
