Enzo Maresca explains why Jadon Sancho is exceeding expectations

Enzo Maresca feels Jadon Sancho is doing even better than anticipated since arriving at Chelsea in the summer, and has also discussed what Noni Madueke needs to do to take his game to the next level.

Sancho has become an influential member of Maresca’s team, starting six of our last eight Premier League matches and brilliantly setting up Cole Palmer’s opener at Crystal Palace in our most recent fixture in that competition.

In total, the winger has 17 Chelsea appearances to his name since joining on loan from Manchester United and got the first of his six assists on his Premier League debut against tomorrow night's opponent's Bournemouth, teeing up Christopher Nkunku to net the winning goal back in September after coming off the bench.

Ahead of our return fixture against the Cherries at Stamford Bridge this evening, Maresca discussed Sancho’s performances, and revealed he is doing even better than expected.

‘For me he’s doing very well,’ said our head coach. ‘I am quite surprised with Jadon, because I knew Jadon already [from seeing him at his previous clubs] and I know what I expected from him, but in terms of being consistent, he’s doing very well.

Another Chelsea winger who has proved important to Maresca’s plans is Madueke, who has featured in all but one of our Premier League fixtures since the opening day of the season.

When asked if that consistency is something he would like to see more of from Noni, the Italian was clear it is something he wants from all of his players, but especially those as talented as our No.11.

‘It is not only from Noni, from all the squad,' Maresca said. 'There are players who are doing that, like Moi [Caicedo] who since we started has been doing well. Almost all of them are doing well, but it’s not just about Noni, it’s about all the players. In the moment that they can be consistent, it is better for the team.

Enzo finished with a point of pride for Chelsea, reflecting on the fact our last Premier League match saw the Blues line up with a centre-back pairing made in Cobham, as Josh Acheampong partnered fellow Academy graduate Levi Colwill on his full top-flight debut.

There is plenty of competition for a starting spot in Maresca’s line-up in that position, but there is no question Acheampong’s emergence in the senior squad and the continually impressive performances of Colwill have been a boost for the Blues, whether they feature against the Cherries today or not.
