Merstham’s story is incredible. They started in the EXTRA preliminary round on August 14th in front of 137 people. Tonight’s 4th round tie is their Ninth game of this seasons competition and they go toe to toe with the 9 times winners. Watch it live on the #CFC app/website, 7pm https://t.co/uOYaZUWrNV

Think tonight's crowd is majority Merstham tbh, fair enough.

A capable performance from Chelsea tonight, some outstanding moments but not an outstanding display. Can't really win in a game like that, except just win, but they got their goals and made sure it wasn't a messy night. Antwi and Cardoso played well, Mheuka showed class.

So I think about this 'too good for this level' stuff a lot because, in academy football, it's rarely true. More on that next but, to be clear, of course Chelsea are too good for Merstham, that much was obvious before kickoff. https://t.co/hQYa77nFeO

I can't speak as to the motivations as they're many and often will come with good reason, but as a big-picture thing it seems to be a) copying what someone else is doing and b) trying to turn a quick profit while a player is trending upwards. Players and families do this too.

Mheuka, for example, has moved up to PL2 football this season and is generally capable there; his performances and his traits stand out, the goals haven't arrived in volume but they will. When he's at U18 level the game is much easier for him. You balance accordingly.

I'm as big a champion as anyone of getting players playing outside of their comfort zones and moving up when they're carrying form and momentum and seem ready to contribute in some capacity but, at the same time, take the steps you need to take to get there.
