Mount on starting quick, Christmas goals and the cloud hanging over the
win
28 DEC 2022
Having opened his Stamford Bridge account for 2022 in the final game of the
year, Mason Mount reflected on the Blues bouncing back and also offered
words of support to Reece James after his injury setback.
Remarkably, Mount had not scored on home soil since the 1-1 draw with
Everton on 16 December 2021, but he put that right in style with a fine,
curled finish against Bournemouth. His third goal of the season ended up
sealing a first victory in six Premier League matches.
‘That was a massive game for us to get back to winning ways,’ Mount
underlined. ‘It’s been quite a long time since we won. We needed to start
quick because we knew it might have been a tough game. To get the two goals
in the first half was very important, and to then stick it out and get a
clean sheet showed a lot of character.
‘It was exactly how we wanted to go about it. We were aggressive,
confident on the ball and created a lot of chances. We could have had a few
more. There’s things to work on but it’s a positive result. We are back on
track and need to keep going.’
Mount was pleased with his own contribution in front of goal, having also played his part in the build-up to Kai Havertz’s opener.
‘It was a good finish and very pleased with that. To score at Stamford
Bridge means a lot to me. It’s been a long time since I did it. It’s like
Christmas, December again!
‘To score the second goal and make the game a bit calmer was very important
for us, so very happy with it.’
The only disappointment on an otherwise excellent evening in SW6 was the
injury to Reece James early in the second half.
Mount’s England and Chelsea team-mate was playing his first game since mid-October, but it ended abruptly when he went down in some discomfort holding the back of his thigh.

‘It’s a bit of a cloud over the win,’ said Mount. ‘To see Reecey go off in
his first game back is tough to watch. I saw him quickly in the changing
room. He’s very down and he’s gutted.
‘We don’t know how bad it is or what he’s done yet but I feel for him
because it’s his first game back and to come off like that is not
good.’
