Match report: Chelsea 2-2 Hull City

12 Sep 2026

Supporters at Stamford Bridge have certainly not been starved of entertainment this season. Unfortunately, the Blues' latest back-and-forth game ended with Hull City leaving west London with a 2-2 draw and a point.

Xabi Alonso's side had, once again, made an impressive start. We were ahead inside seven minutes against the Tigers, as Morgan Rogers collected a Joao Pedro pass and slammed home a finish at the near post.

The Blues appeared in control of the game, but two quick-fire Hull goals from Mohamed Belloumi meant we trailed at the break. Another comeback was required if we were to win.

We got halfway there. In the 66th minute, Joao Pedro drove a left-footed strike into the net after a cross from Cole Palmer. Further chances came and went in the time that remained. Yet on this occasion, we couldn't find a winner as Hull held on for a share of the spoils.

== Ahead early ==

Alonso made two changes to the side that started our last Premier League outing at Arsenal. Josh Acheampong and Maxence Lacroix stepped out of the back line, with Malo Gusto and Levi Colwill coming in.

The Blues set up with a back four ahead of Emi Martinez. Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato were included in defence alongside Gusto and Colwill, Reece James partnered Romeo Lavia in midfield, while Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro were in our attack.

Hull arrived at Stamford Bridge having not conceded in their opening three games. Alonso's side, meanwhile, have developed a habit of scoring early this term – and we did so once more.

Just seven minutes had elapsed when Palmer collected possession in the Hull half and fed a pass into the feet of Joao Pedro. The Brazilian turned and moved the ball to Rogers, who shifted it onto his left foot and drove a near-post shot beyond Konstantinos Tzolakis.

== Searching for a second ==

Going behind didn't alter Hull's approach. The Tigers sat deep and attempted to soak up pressure. It left few gaps for the Blues to exploit, but a chance was fashioned for Neto after the ball was won back in midfield.

It enabled the Blues to counter and after Joao Pedro found the Portuguese winger breaking into the penalty area, Neto tried to guide a shot into the far corner. Tzolakis was alert, though, and pushed the attempt wide.

From set-pieces, we carried a threat. One low James cross into the near-post was guided narrowly wide by Neto, while our skipper came close with a whipped delivery that Tzolakis saved. As the goalkeeper looked to restart play, he collided with Colwill and needed treatment. It proved a turning point in the half.

== Twice bitten ==

After the stoppage, Tzolakis restarted the game. He punted the ball long and Hull wing-back Ryan Giles chased it to the byline and hooked it into the Chelsea penalty area. Hato misjudged the flight, and then the bounce, and Belloumi was able to power a measured strike beyond Martinez.

The unexpected goal swung momentum in Hull's favour and the visitors took full advantage by grabbing a quick-fire second.

Colwill had done excellently to deflect a goal-bound shot from Lewie Coyle behind, but from the resulting corner a Semi Ajayi header struck the crossbar. The rebound fell to McBurnie and he teed up Belloumi, whose shot was deflected on its way into the net.

== Work to do ==

Hull's six-minute gut-punch blunted the Blues for the remainder of the half. A Gusto shot deflected wide and a late corner cleared behind from under his crossbar by a Hull defender was the best we offered.

At the interval, Alonso introduced Pep Chavarria for Hato. The shape stayed the same, but there was greater urgency to our possession. Rogers' physicality when running with the ball was causing problems for the Hull back line, and he was fouled twice in quick succession.

James took both free-kicks. The Chelsea captain tried to catch out Tzolakis at his near-post first, before he whipped another attempt from 25 yards over the wall and toward the top corner. The Hull goalkeeper clawed it away.

After a break in play following a collision of heads involving Joao Pedro and Nobel Mendy, the Tigers fashioned a chance. Regan Slater was given time to line up a shot and he powered the ball at Martinez, who beat the effort away and then reacted well to stop the ball from reaching Oli McBurnie.

== Pulling level ==

Hull's backline was proving difficult to break down. But with 24 minutes to play, we found a way through. Palmer claimed the assist, as he drove to the byline down the Blues' left and crossed low for Joao Pedro. The ball was slightly behind the Brazilian, yet he readjusted expertly and drilled a left-footed finish into the roof of the net.

The Blues were level and there was plenty of time to fashion a winner. Given Hull's resilience, that wouldn't be easy, and Alonso introduced Valentin Barco and Danny Welbeck for Lavia and Gusto to try to help us find a way through.

== Pushing hard ==

Hull's threat diminished as the game moved closer to a conclusion. We had chances, with James having a low shot saved and Palmer guiding an attempt over from inside the penalty area.

The best opportunity for a Blues winner fell to Rogers. After a Hull break was snuffed out by Colwill, he broke forward, found Welbeck, who passed to Palmer. The England international evaluated his options and spotted Rogers racing forward.

Palmer's pass was on point and Rogers controlled and fired at goal. Unfortunately, it was too close to Tzolakis, who saved.

Hull, meanwhile, almost snatched all three points in the final minutes, as a ball across the box was met by Mohamed-Ali Cho. His attempt was on target but Martinez was down to save.

Six minutes were added. Estevao, introduced late on, worked Tzolakis at his near post. The Brazilian then forced a late penalty appeal for handball against Ajayi. Nothing was given.

There was one last opportunity. After a break led by Estevao was halted on the edge of the Hull box, we were awarded a free-kick 20 yards from goal. Palmer lined it up. It would be the final chance of the game.

Unfortunately, Palmer's effort was too high and the referee followed it with the full-time whistle. The points were shared.

== What it means ==

The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League table, with seven points secured from our opening four matches.

== What is next ==

Alonso's side have a free week before we make the short journey to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford on Friday evening. Kick-off at our west London neighbours is at 8pm.
