Match report: Chelsea 3-0 Milan

08 Aug 2026

A Joao Pedro brace and a fine Moises Caicedo volley helped the Blues record an impressive 3-0 victory over Serie A side Milan to win the 2026 Indonesia Super Cup in Jakarta.

The fourth match on our pre-season tour took us to the Indonesian capital, and Xabi Alonso will undoubtedly be pleased with his side's performance, who controlled proceedings from start to finish.

It was in first-half stoppage time that the deadlock was broken; Joao Pedro met a Caicedo corner and glanced a header home.

The Brazilian grabbed his and our second moments into the second period. Pedro Neto was the creator as he guided a cross to the back post for our No.20 to steer home. Our third arrived soon after, as Caicedo produced a wonderful outside-of-the-boot volley from a Romeo Lavia corner.

Further chances to add to our lead came and went, but the scoreline reflected an impressive display from the Blues, who will be back in action tomorrow in Malaysia against Johor Darul Ta'zim, a game you can watch live on CFC+.

== Starting well ==

With the 2026/27 campaign fast approaching, Alonso's starting XI was strong. Robert Sanchez began in goal; Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato and Marco Palestra started in defence; captain Caicedo and Lavia were midfield partners; Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto and Danny Welbeck were in attack.

The contest was played in sweltering conditions, but both sides moved the ball sharply and each attack was met with an approving roar from supporters inside the stadium.

It was the Blues who fashioned the first opportunity of the game, as a raking ball forward enabled Joao Pedro to break through on goal. Yet as the Brazilian released his shot, Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani raced out to smother the attempt.

Portugal international Rafael Leao proved a constant threat in the opening period, with his powerful and direct running enabling Milan to break up the pitch at speed. Once in the Blues' penalty area, he was well shackled by Acheampong and Fofana.

Alonso's side carried the greater threat during the first half – and we came close to breaking the deadlock after 15 minutes. An intelligent run from Welbeck was spotted

Neto was next to go close for the Blues, with the winger given time to measure a shot from 20 yards. His curled attempt was on target but Torriani pushed the ball away from danger.

Aside from a Luka Modric shot blocked on its way to goal and a shot from Strahinja Pavlovic that flashed wide, the Blues' goal was largely unthreatened. At the opposite end, as the half drew to a close, we fashioned two good chances. Both fell to Joao Pedro.

The Brazilian couldn't find the net with his first, as he drilled a Palestra cutback over the crossbar. However, moments later, the Italian full-back won a corner that Caicedo delivered, and Joao Pedro glanced a header beyond Torriani to send us into the break ahead.

== Taking control ==

At the interval, Milan made a raft of changes. Alonso, for the first time in pre-season, did not – and the decision proved fruitful as the Blues struck two quickfire goals after the restart.

Our second arrived immediately after the restart. The ball was worked to Pedro Neto on the right, and he shifted it onto his left foot and crossed to the back post, where Joao Pedro escaped his marker to guide a finish beyond Torriani.

Two quickly became three – and the goal was expertly taken. It came from another corner, but the execution was very different as Lavia drilled a pass to the edge of the penalty area, where Caicedo steered a volley into the corner with the outside of his boot.

== Pushing for more ==

There was no let-up from Alonso's side. Palmer was next to threaten with a shot from 18 yards that Torriani saved well before Palestra drilled an effort wide after a cross from Geovany Quenda, who had moments earlier entered the fray alongside Nicolas Jackson. Neto and Welbeck were the players replaced.

Jackson was immediately impactful, forcing the Milan defence back with a series of driving runs. One ended in the Senegal international slipping a pass through to Palmer, whose low drive across goal forced Torriani into another smart stop.

Quenda was a lively presence on the Chelsea right after coming on, and the Portuguese winger produced neat footwork to make room for a shot, but flashed his attempt wide. Jackson rattled the post soon after following another strong surge into the Milan penalty area.

Alonso made further changes in the closing stages. Aaron Anselmino replaced Jorrel Hato before Reggie Watson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Estevao were introduced for Caicedo, Palmer and Joao Pedro. In stoppage time, Fofana was brought off for Mamadou Sarr.

The final minutes passed by without incident and, after the full-time whistle was blown, the Blues lifted the Indonesia Super Cup in front of more than 40,000 supporters in the GBK Stadium.

== What comes next... ==

It's a quick turnaround for Alonso and his players, as the Blues make a short trip to Malaysia to face Johor Darul Ta'zim tomorrow (Sunday). The game begins at 8pm local time, and 1pm in the UK. You can watch the game live on CFC+.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
