Match report: Chelsea 0-1 Juventus
05 Aug 2026
There were first outings in blue for Mike Penders, Geovany Quenda and Danny Welbeck, plus the return to action of Mykhailo Mudryk, as our pre-season campaign continued with a narrow defeat to Juventus.
Quenda and Welbeck were in from the start in Hong Kong, and both were sharp in the opening 45 minutes. However, with few chances fashioned by either side, the game was goalless at the interval
In the second period, moments after several substitutions were made by Xabi Alonso, Juventus winger Edon Zhegrova produced a fine left-footed strike to beat half-time substitute Penders.
We pushed hard in search of an equaliser in the time that remained – with Mudryk playing the final eight minutes – but couldn't level the contest despite late opportunities for Estevao Willian and Romeo Lavia.

== New faces ==
Alonso included two of our summer arrivals in his starting XI. Robert Sanchez returned from injury in goal and was protected by a back four of Marco Palestra, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabiyo and Jorrel Hato.
Moises Caicedo was given his first minutes of pre-season and captained the side. He was deployed in midfield alongside 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, while the attack included Quenda, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Welbeck.

There were few chances of note for either side in the opening 20 minutes. An early shot from Andrea Cambiaso was blocked well by Tosin and midfielder Manuel Locatelli drove an effort wide from distance.
Quenda was a lively presence on his first start and dovetailed well with Palestra down the Chelsea right. The Portuguese winger fashioned our first sight of goal with a whipped cross that Joao Pedro glanced wide, before he drilled an effort from the edge of the box over.
Juventus' threat predominantly came on the counter, as when the Blues had possession the Italian side sat deep in their own defensive third. Fabio Miretti did cause a moment of panic for the Blues with a poked attempt from a Cambiaso cross, but Sanchez had it covered.

Welbeck linked well with his new team-mates and Quenda was a threat moving inside off the right. The 19-year-old fashioned room for a shot and powered an effort toward goal, only for a Juventus defender to stand firm and block.
As the opening 45 minutes approached its conclusion, Sanchez was tested. Jeremie Boga, schooled in our Academy, was given room to drive an effort at goal, and the Blues stopper lept to his left to save. Arkadiusz Milik then fired wide for the Serie A side.
== Half-time changes ==
Alonso made four alterations at the break. Penders replaced Sanchez, Mamdou Sarr stepped on for Tosin, Estevao was introduced for Quenda and Nicolas Jackson came on for Welbeck.
Jackson was immediately involved, producing a surging run that saw him burst beyond two challenges and slip a pass through to Palestra, whose attempt was blocked en route to goal.
The Italian did force a save from Mattia Perin soon after, as he raced onto an excellent Caicedo pass and tried to guide an attempt beyond the Juventus goalkeeper. Perin reacted well to save, and then got to the rebound before Gittens.
Shortly after the hour mark, Alonso turned to his bench. Josh Acheampong, Tayo Subuloye, Aaron Anselmino, Dario Essugo, Romeo Lavia, Dastan Satpayev and Liam Delap were brought on, with Palestra, Fofana, Hato, Caicedo, Nicoll-Jazuli, Gittens and Joao Pedro replaced.

== A fine strike ==
From the restart, Juventus broke the deadlock. It was a fine strike. The ball was knocked to Zhegrova on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area and he whipped a fine strike into the top corner.
As those introduced settled into the contest, we began to take control of possession. Juventus continued to defend well, although our threat increased in the final ten minutes.
In the closing stages, there was the return of Mudryk, who replaced Jackson. It was the first time the Ukraine international was in action for the Blues since November 2024.

Alonso's side pushed for an equaliser. Estevao rasped a free-kick into the arms of Perin before Anselmino also forced a save from the goalkeeper.
The final action of the game saw a passage of Chelsea possession end with a pass into the feet of Lavia 20 yards from goal. The Belgian curled a shot toward the top corner, but his attempt cleared the crossbar and the Blues were beaten.
== What comes next... ==
The next stop on our summer tour takes the Blues to Indonesia. We will face AC Milan at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Saturday.
